  • 1513: Santo Rosario, Mexico City
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Recorded by Fabian Avila Elizalde.
"This is the religious sounds for the dead. When the loved ones are gone, houses become a space of religious rituals, an extension of churchs, I mean, house as a acred space to tribute people we love. This is part of the "Santo Rosario" and includes some chants and prayers."

  • 1511: Unseen (New Delhi)
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Reimagined by Astoria Sound.
"Honestly, we chose the muezzin call because it was the final recording available, but it really spoke to us regardless. It’s a very subtle and tranquil call to prayer - a tradition that resonates through the city’s air. Approaching this recording, we wanted to really explore the boundaries of resonation, using a wide array of bells and oscillators, while still leaving room for the muezzin to weave his call."

  • 1510: Matachines dancers, San Antonio, Texas
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Recorded by Veronica Salinas.
"These sounds are taken from the matachines dancers, a blend of Spanish and indigenous dancing that takes place to recognize Immaculate Conception Feast Day. Traditionally the dancing and drumming takes place outdoors but due to the weather the performers were granted use of the mission chapel."

  • 1509: Immersed and Dissolved: Sacred collaboration
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Reimagined by James Kent.
"This recording caught my ear as with the beat there was an element of nature and collaboration running through the work. I wanted to capture this element of collaboration through a natural space that was not influenced by man but by the elements. I chose to add the element of vibration to re-ignite the Matachines dancers in an alternative environment.
Plunged into a rock pool with a sheet of thin ice covering the top with the original recording being played through two small speakers creating small but significant vibrations on top of the ice. Making the razor clams at the edge of the ice pool shift and vibrate to the Matachines dancers beat. A constant state of flux with each element working together to share the vibrations. The razor clams becoming immersed slowly in the pool as the ice slowly cracks with the echoes of the Matachines dancers."
