John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Roy Haynes at the Newport Jazz festival 1963.The 'classic' Coltrane Quartet with a difference and the difference is drummer Roy Haynes. Mr "Snap Crackle" Haynes brings a new rhythmic feel to the Quartet and changes everyone's approach to the music. This is great stuff....fresh and alive and vital.

The only recording by this great band led by pianist/composer/theorist, George Russell, Eric Dolphy is features on bass clarinet and alto saxophone, Don Ellis, trumpet, David Baker on trombone plus the recording debut of Steve Swallow on accoustic bass and the underrated Joe hunt on drums. Even though the music was recorded in 1961 it's as modern as tomorrow!

Underrated pianist/composer Walter Davis Jr. was at his early peak when he recorded his one and only Blue Note recording with a hand-picked quintet playing all of his compositions. The great alto saxophonist Jackie McLean is on the front line with the lyrical Donald Byrd on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass and the always swinging and hard driving drummer Arthur Taylor. This is state-of-the-art Jazz in New York before Ornette Coleman, Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and others changed the scene around with some other sounds.

Led by the great Canadian born trumpeter, Maynard Ferguson,this band was second to none for dynamics and excitement and creativity. Solid arrangements by members like trombonist Slide Hampton, tenor saxophonist Willie Maiden and trombonist Don Sebesky and contributors like Benny Golson, Marty Paich and Jimmy Giuffre. Great soloists like the leader and alto saxophonist Jimmy Ford, Carmen Leggio on tenor and Joe Zawinul on piano coupled with a driving rhythm section of Jimmy Rowser on bass and the great Frankie Dunlop on drums made this band one of the best.

This concert known as "The Lost Concert" was done at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on August 18,1966 by this fine working band led by trumpeter Art Farmer and tenor saxophone master Jimmy Heath with the late Albert Dailey on piano,Walter Booker on bass and Granville 'Mickey' Roker on drums. This album has just been released on the Mosaic Select Series and features mostly previously unreleased material......great stuff!!

Mr Adderley gives us a history of Jazz music and then an overview of contemporary artists all with recorded examples. Even though this was recorded in 1960 it still is an effective look at the music. Adderley should have been asked to do one of this type of album every five years but as least we have this one to conclude Part 2 of The Jazz Show's annual education feature.

This was one of the most amazing bands that bassist/composer/innovator Charles Ningus ever led. The band consisted of Johnny Coles("Little Johnny 'C'')on trumpet, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet, Clifford Jordan on tenor saxophone, Jaki Byard, piano and Dannie Richmond on drums. This concert recorded by The Student Society at Cornell has just been newly discovered and issued as a double CD on Blue Note. The music reflects Mingus in a positive and optimistic space and yet as always covers the many moods of Mingus from joy to anger. A monumental discovery!!!

Frank Foster is one of the great underrated exponents of the tenor saxophone and is also a wonderful writer and arranger.He entered the New York scene in the early 50's and played with and recorded with such legends as pianists Elmo Hope and Thelonious Monk but opted for the security of the Count Basie Band for over 10 years. After leaving Basie he led is own ensembles such as the one heard on tonight's feature called "Manhattan Fever"...Marvin Stamm on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Richard Wyands on piano, Bob Cranshaw on accoustic bass and Mickey Roker on drums and featuring five compositions and six arrangements and the mighty tenor saxophone of Frank Foster.
