This historic meeting of three giants of the music is relaxed and unpretentious but so profound. The "President", Lester Young in great post-war form with his favourite(aside from Count Basie) pianist, Nat "King" Cole. Cole, of course is better known as a singer but was one of the foremost influential pianists of his day and he does double duty here as there is no string bass. Buddy Rich on drums can play so musically and adapt to any situation and he compliments both Young and Cole with his drive and taste> Great music by a great trio.

Some great stuff by two of the most lyrical voices in Jazz. Even though they hated each other they made some great music.Tenor saxophone master Stan Getz was replacing baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan as he had run afoul of the law and was jailed. Baker was in great form as well backed by Mulligan's rhythm section with Carson Smith on bass and the swinging Larry Bunker on drums. Recorded in L.A. at the legenday little club called "The Haig". The first and best meeting between Getz and Baker.

Toshiko Akiyoshi(pianist/composer) and her then husband, alto saxophone master Charlie Mariano co-led this fine quartet which featured the recording debuts of bassist Gene Cherico, who worked with everybody from Paul Desmond and Stan Getz to Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra and drummer Eddie Marshall who also has worked with John Handy,Bobby Hutcherson and everybody who played at San Francisco's legendary "Keystone Korner".Mariano is one of the most passionate voices of the alto saxophone and plays beautifully on this, their only recording as a band.

This eight part suite by the great Johnny Richards stands as one of his masterworks right up there with "Cuban Fire". The Stan Kenton Orchestra conducted by Mr. Richards does a magnificent job of interpreting Richards' commanding music. Some great soloists stand out as well including Marvin Stamm(trumpet),Gabe Baltazar(alto saxophone) and Don Menza(tenor saxophone) and Kenton himself on piano plus many others. A great concerto for Jazz orchestra.

Monk's quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone and John Ore on bass and new drummer Billy Higgins plus two great West Coast based horn players:Harold Land on tenor saxophone and Joe Gordon on trumpet add to the ensemble. Monk himself is in relaxed and inspired form on this live date recorded at the legendary "Blackhawk" in San Francisco.

A quartet date featuring all Andrew Hill compositions played by Hill with the great Sam Rivers on tenor saxophone, Walter Booker on bass and J.C. Moses on drums. Newly issued on Blue Note. "Change" is one of Hill's best.

A musical meeting with four of the greatest exponents of Jazz music. Lionel Hampton,the acknowledged pioneer of the vibraphone with Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass and the incredible Buddy Rich playing brushes thoughout this exciting and significant meeting of four virtuosi.

Tonight's feature: "Stepping Stones" by Woody Shaw and His Quintet at the Village Vanguard. This is some of the late Mr. Shaw's finest work with his working band that featured the incredible tenor saxophone work of the late Carter Jefferson

This was Jimmy's second album for Riverside Records after his "comeback' in 1959. This recording brought out all his skills. First as a major tenor saxophonist. Second as a bandleader.Third as an arranger. Fourth as a composer. "Little" Jimmy Heath is a big man musically on this album called "Really Big!".

Morgan was only 22 when he recorded this mature statement and at 22 was already a veteran Jazz player. Lee appears here with Clifford Jordan(tenor saxophone),Wynton Kelly(piano),Paul Chambers(bass)and Art Blakey(drums). A fine showcase for Morgan's talents.
