Jesus spent the final night of his earthly ministry in prayer. And now, through the ascension, Jesus is still interceding on our behalf before the Father. In prayer, we parter with the ascended Christ to see God's power accomplish what we cannot.

Israel comes out of Egypt in battle formation, with Yahweh himself as their champion leading the way. The Lord manifests his presence as a pillar of cloud and fire. Pharaoh and his armies pursue the Israelites to a dead end, but Yahweh parts the Red Sea and leads Israel through on dry ground.

Pharaoh's continual rebellion leads to the tenth and final plague. God himself descends to strike all the firstborn across the land of Egypt. This plague will not spare Egyptian or Israelite. But for Israel, God provides a way of escape: an unblemished lamb. When he sees the blood of the lamb, he will pass over the house and it will be saved.

God reveals himself in fire to Moses in a tree on a mountain, and that random place becomes a holy place. Over the course of Israel's journey in Exodus, God will continue to manifest his presence as fire. God also reveals to Moses his Name: YHWH / I AM. And he commissions Moses to rescue his people.

Before Moses parted the Red Sea, encountered God on the mountain, or brought down the 10 Commandments, Moses had to make a choice: was he going to be an Israelite or an Egyptian? Moses decides to get out of Egypt, but in the wilderness God gets Egypt out of him. He was looking ahead to a better city, whose Builder and Maker is God.

Jesus is King. He is not simply a teacher bringing truth, he is a King bringing a kingdom. His kingdom is driving out of creation sin, satan, and death. Jesus' gospel is a gospel of power.

Everywhere Jesus went, massive crowds followed. We believe Jesus was and still is deeply compelling. When news about what Jesus can do gets out, multitudes will come to seek him. And yet Jesus didn't love crowds, he loved people. Jesus finds the one person in need, and heals their brokenness.
