City Council Chronicles

We visit Toronto, the largest city in Canada. We crash a butter tart bakeoff at a fancy hotel, watch senior citizens play lawn bowling, and listen to blues on the sidewalk. We also hear from an immigrant, a city councilor, and pastry chefs. This is a special episode in an occasional series about towns and cities. Different people answer the same two questions: what is the best thing about this place? And what is the worst thing about this place?

Carrie Tergin--Jefferson City, MO mayor--is famous for her "selfies with the mayor," so naturally we judge the entries from this year's International City Hall Selfie Day. Plus, we talk about a couple of unusual meeting moments involving the old prison. Follow along with the selfie judging at https://councilchronicles.com/selfie/.

Jeff Longwell--Wichita, KS mayor--admits that his dry sense of humor can sometimes leave the wrong impression. We visit Richmond, the current capital of Virginia and the former capital of the Confederacy. I stand in the middle of the James River, witness a boisterous rally for trains, and conspire with an admiring citizen to take a picture with the mayor. This is a special episode in an occasional series about towns and cities. Different people answer the same two questions: what is the best thing about this place? And what is the worst thing about this place?
