Our lives as Christians are to be spent at the foot of Jesus, listening to the words of Jesus while obeying the commands of Jesus. Our devotion and declaration are constant evidence of our willingness to abide in God and to obey God. And as our hearts draw closer to God, we become a source of God's goodness, poured out through word and deed.

We live in a culture today of rampant intolerance, anger and division. What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus in a time like this? Jesus teaches us how we can love in hard places. Jesus shows us the heart of God in loving his enemies, forgiving countless offenses and paying down the cost through selfless sacrifice.

What is the good life? Many people think of it as the freedom to travel, to be creative and to have career success. Jesus offers a radical counter-cultural view of the good life. He shows us that the good life can be found in poverty, humility and a joyful acceptance of the Kingdom of God both now and in the future.

​Many people think that religious people are gloomy and judgmental. But Jesus shows us how he has come to bring us to true joy and to a true celebration. In our work obsessed culture, Jesus has come to bring true rest. In our broken world, Jesus has come to bring us an ultimate restoration.

As Jesus begins his earthly ministry he begins to call unlikely people to follow him. Jesus call in our lives transforms how we think of our purpose in life and how we think of work. Jesus ultimately calls people not into performance but into an ongoing relationship marked by grace.

Much of our lives have been shaped by words that we have heard from our parents, from our teachers and from our friends. Those words can give us understanding and courage but also can diminish and mislead us. The words of Jesus are the words of the true King which has the power to illuminate, to heal and renew.

Following Jesus is not always filled with thrilling victory but often dry and difficult seasons of life. Jesus not only shows us the purpose of these seasons but also how we can find joy in midst of these trials of life.

John the Baptist prepared the way for the ministry of Jesus by calling people to radically change. True change is a Spirit-empowered gift that causes us to live a life of radical compassion and justice.
