In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls his followers to live by a radical ethic that begins with the heart.

Jesus shows us that underneath murder is a heart of anger that everyone shares. In a culture of rage, Jesus calls his followers to actively love, forgive and make peace. Jesus shows us how to be healed of our anger and become agents of peace.

What is the essence of someone who follows Jesus? In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us that a God-follower has a love for the law of God borne out of a genuine love for God. Jesus leads us to understand that one day there will be no need for the law because in the new heavens and new earth we will all instinctively and joyfully live wholly for God and love others.

Jesus tells us in the Sermon on the Mount that his followers will always live in a world filled with darkness and conflict. However, he calls his followers to live in midst of that darkness as light, in midst of that conflict as peacemakers. Jesus calls us away from the emptiness of living for ourselves to a life of passionate purpose.

The Beatitudes tell us about the essential attributes of those who want to follow Jesus. In contrast to our culture, Jesus says that the most blessed people are the most broken. In a culture of Instagram filters, Jesus says that the most beautiful are those who have tears and scars. Jesus reveals the joy that comes from finding ourselves as children of the King.

Unfortunately, most of us have seen disunity in sports teams, the workplace, among friends/family, and in the church. Fortunately, Paul informs us that we can break away from these chains of disunity if we chose to think like Christ did when he left the glories of heaven to pursue his rebellious children. Christ alone is our perfect example of a humility so radical that it brings together a people from sinful disunity into beautiful unity.

God is transcendent, mysterious, and unsearchable. We comfort the afflicted in light of this. We're reminded of the necessity of faith because we don't have all the answers. Most importantly, we're reminded of God's gracious condescension to us in revealing himself and his gospel.

All of us likely want to encounter the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, but what does that phrase actually mean? And how can we experience God’s peace when there is so much violence and unrest in the world and so much conflict and tension in our own lives and workplaces? God-image is the picture we get in our minds when we hear the name, “God.” Some can visualize God as a loving father; others, because of past experiences, may envision God as primarily angry, irrelevant, or someone only to be bothered when there is a need or crisis. But a relationship with God is so much more rich and deep than these images imply. Join us as we encounter a God who loves us and chooses to dwell with us.

There’s an internal battle being waged in the soul of every person. There is a natural tendency for our anger, lust and envy to overtake our lives. But the Apostle Paul shows us that we can live by a different Spirit that will free and transform us.

The Spirit of God gifts each individual not only with the power and presence of God but also gifts to bless his people. Romans 12 tells us how we can identify our spiritual gifts and use them in a way to bring blessings to our community.
