It was a special edition of Sekeres and Price today as we head to the holiday season. 

Patrick Johnston of the Province joined Matt and Blake and started off with a Covid update. Talked about how the NHL will get through this compared to the other pro leagues. We heard a clip from Bruce Boudreau on the little 2 day mini camp and got PJ’s thoughts on it. Talked about how the NHL could play out the rest of the schedule. A lot of the news from today. 

Jeff Paterson, our Canucks Reporter, joined after the Canucks practiced today. Says it was funny to hear a coach who has just won six in a row, drill down on the team. Thinks that in a perfect world the team would want to continue to play but Covid has the final say here. Talked about what practice looked like today. Thinks the pause to the season will hurt a little bit, in the end. Talked about the players and their take on the pause. JT Miller is over it. Talked about Canucks and who would make the US team. Doens’t think we would have seen 5 but they all made their own case.

Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk joined Blake and Jeff to talk about where in the week we actually are in the NFL. Says it’s just crazy. Things start at the Owners meetings when they starting tinkering with protocols. Rams had 29 players on their Covid list but you just can’t play a game with that many on the list. Says it is unfortunate for the teams that are in the thick of it who have big games with key players out. Talked about the odd season the Cardinals are having. Charean says it’s like their last season but there they could point to Kyler’s shoulder. To lay the egg against the worst team in the league is inexcusable. Talked about the upcoming Tuesday games. 

John Shannon joined Blake and Jeff to talk about the world of sports and all that is not happening. Thinks it might be a bit of a challenge to schedule all the postponed games into the break that was supposed to be for the Olympics. Said this isn’t only affecting players and staff. 15 on ice officials are also stuck in hotel rooms around cities in the league. Talked about how much a blow it was to HNIC to not have Leafs vs Cancuks. For sure it was a blow to Rogers but they are in no position to dictate public health matters. John would not be surprised if the All-Star game is also cancelled. Talked about what the hold up is for not going to the Olympics. John thinks the players still want to go. Even though Gary can pull the plug, the players will want something back. Talked about Paul Maurice and why he stepped away from the Jets. Thinks that it was as good a secret kept in the last decade that he has ever seen. Would like to think that it was Maurice on his on velition. It has been a very honourable relationship between owner, GM and Coach. But that doens’t happen in hockey. If that’s what Paul said, John will take him at his word. Talked about might be coming to the Canucks FO. Talked about what he knows about Derek Clancey. Says JR’s netword of people is very deep and focused. Doesn’t surprise John or anybody that Jim would land on a guy like Clancey. Talked about Canucks jerseys. 

Rob Williams of The Daily Hive joined the show to talk about the day that has been or Canucks twitter. It was all about the choice of jerseys for the Canucks. Says it was the only good news on his timeline. We’ve seen a few other goalies do tribute equiptment. Seeing the photo of Demko in net looked a lot like Kirk McLean. Thinks it was really cool. Talked about colour schemes and who likes what. Thinks it depends on what era you grew up in. Talked about if we will see the flying skate jersey back with the Canucks. Talked about much more we will see the Canucks on ice for the last week of the year.

Connor Bedard of the National Junior Team joined the show to talk about the upcoming World Jr Tourney. Talked about the plan through the next few days, including quarantine and a trip to Red Deer for some exhibition games. Is pretty special to be given this kind of trust at such a young age. Talked about the year in the WHL so far. Glad to have some familiar faces on the team. 

Rick Dhaliwal joined Blake and Jeff. Says the media can’t be too negative now that the team is on a 6 game winning streak. Brock Boeser has woken up.  Brought up a Jim Rutherford interview in Toronto and wondered why he isn’t talking to any local shows here. Loves listening to JR, he has a plan and surrounds himself with good people. Talked about the jersey being thrown on the ice. Rick loves what Stan brings to the organization. He knows the strengths and the weaknesses. JR doens’t need yes-men. Says the body language of this club has changed. These guys are having fun. Talked about Podkolzin. Loves being here and playing the game of hockey. He smiles and and laughs. He is a rink-rat.

David Alter, Leafs Beat reporter for the Hockey News joined us, live from his hotel room right here at the Wall Centre. Started off talking about the logistics for the Leafs through this Western road swing with the surging Covid outbreak. Talked about who from the Leafs is in protocol and the team activities that were impacted by it. Talked about Jason Spezza and all the extra work he is putting in after his suspension was reduced. Talked about Morgan Rielly. Says the contract means he has meant a lot to the team. Talked about the transition the organization made to make him feel like he is the number 1 dman on the team. Talked about potential additions that could come to the team. Says it depends on if injuries to big time players could allow them to go out and get a rental. Talked about some of the fringe players that have come in and made a difference. 

Gregg Bell, Seahawks beat reporter joined after the Seahawks game was pushed to Tuesday. He talked about how Covid has affected the NFL and what to expect. Talked about how much they need to win this game and how the game being pushed back has hurt that possibility.

Scott Rintoul joined for his regular spot in hour 2 on Thursday. Started off by talking about the poll question. Says it’s Jared McCann or you are just wrong. Also threw out the name, Tyler Madden. Takled about Dahlén. Hopes he goes on to have a promising career. Says he wouldn’t vote for him because of what McCann has become. Talked about the Boudreau story. Not unique to the Canucks. Says people were losing interest and now that they are winning, interest is coming back. If they can continue to win the week, as BB said, the value of the players will go up. Talked about Derek Clancey. Talked about brining in a diverse hire. Talked about Covid protocols. Talked about the difference between the NHL and NFL and why NFL’s can be different. Talked about who the Canucks best player is. Said you have to consider Garland. Though the answer is Demko. Talked about the CFL and proposed rule changes. 

Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson, joined in his regular spot. Talked about the logistics of any news regarding restrictions around the Canucks and the arena. It does feel difficult to imagine that we will be at Rogers arena to watch a hockey game vs the Leafs. Ran through the schedule of the week and how much ice time the players are getting. Talked about Brisebois coming up. Talked about no travelling media and how hard information was to come by. Talked about Stan Smyl and his promotion. Had to go back and look at his last title. Talked about which Canucks prospect got away. Would cast his vote for Forsling.

Jonathan Dahlen of the San Jose Sharks joined Matt and Blake. Talked about his rookie year. Says he just came into camp to make the team. He has been given a great opportunity and lots of ice time. Wasn’t really that confident that he would make the team. Just took it day by day and worked hard everyday. Fortunately it worked and he is trying to do the same things. Doesn’t see his success in Europe as a comparable to EP40 because they are different players. Talked about how well he knows Elias. Goes back to Timra and playing on a line there with each other. Played a lot together and it was a lot of fun. Says they FaceTime here and there. Met a couple times in the summer. Says they are good friends. Didn’t talk a lot about playing together with the Canucks when he was in Utica. He wasn’t playing well enough there. Will be awesome to be on the same ice sheet tomorrow. Had some low confidence in Utica. Talked about his dad, who played 1000 games in the league. Says it is awesome to have that influence and to be playing in the same organization as he did for 3.5 years. Talked about playing with Couture. He is such a good player and a great Captain. Talked about his hometown in Sweden where Edler is from too. His dad is also a big deal there. 

Darren Dreger joined Matt and Blake. Doesn’t know much about the Canucks that have tested positive. Doesn’t want to dive in. Charters that don’t take off peaks his interest, though. Talked about any overarching rules by the NHL as a maximum amount of players testing positive before they postpone games. Thinks that conference vs conference are very hard to make up, especially with three week olympic break. Says that it is dependent on the spread within the room and what can be managed. The NHL pays closer attention when teams spread to other teams. Talked about what he knows about Derek Clancey. Says that Jim Rutherford is a guy that gets ahead of problems. Recognizes things then acts. He needs guys that can hit the ground running and Clancey is that guy.

Talked about the game vs the Blue Jackets.  Thinks the team has gotten the bounces with who has tested positive. As this goes deeper, it will affect more important players. Talked about the Canucks hiring an AGM before a GM. Talked about the potential of Boudreau winning the Jack Adams. Thinks the voters would take into account that he had three quarters of a season to work with.
