“I do believe. Help my unbelief.” That one line from Mark 9:24 is short, raw, and almost uncomfortably relatable, especially when you’re carrying stress you can’t fix. We slow down and unpack what’s happening in the story, why a desperate father’s prayer matters so much, and how it gives Christian men language for the moments when faith feels fragile.

When darkness descends, flee solitude. 1 Kings 19:11 (NIV): “The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’”
God wanted Elijah’s attention. Elijah obeyed and beheld a display of power. The roar of tempests bounced off the canyon walls. “But the Lord was not in the wind” (1 Kings 19:11). An earthquake sent tremors through the desert floor. “But the Lord was not in the earthquake” (1 Kings 19:11). Next came fire that leapt to the height of the trees. “But the Lord was not in the fire” (1 Kings 19:12). Then… “the sound of a low whisper” (1 Kings 19:12).
The soothing touch of God was needed for Elijah’s season of sadness. Listen for it…listen for Him.

On a teaching trip to Moscow, I decided to take the subway to get lunch. Standing in the subway car, I started whistling simply because I felt good after an enjoyable morning teaching and the day was pleasant. The passengers stared at me like I was insane.
One of my favorite books of optical illusions always astounds me as the pictures deceive my eyes—like one with two lines of the same length appearing to be different sizes, or the famous “impossible staircase” in which four flights of stairs seem to link in a continuous loop. It can also be a little disconcerting to realize we don’t always see things as they truly are.
When a father learned his five-year-old daughter had fallen overboard from the fourth deck of the cruise ship they were on, he plunged into the ocean forty feet below to rescue her. He held on to his daughter while treading water for more than ten minutes before the ship’s rescue team brought them safely back on board. As soon as the father heard his daughter was in trouble, he risked everything to save her.

We hand the mic to Lion member Tom Monck for a story that moves from a Catholic upbringing and early church involvement to teenage rebellion, addiction, and consequences that stack up fast. Tom shares what it was like getting sober, realizing sobriety did not automatically mean knowing God, and how becoming a husband and father exposed the gap between “religion” and real relationship with Jesus. His turning point comes through community, a Wednesday night class that challenges his assumptions, and a men’s retreat where Scripture finally lands in his bones, leading to prayer, baptism, and a new direction.

For six long weeks Elijah had walked across the wilderness of Sinai. Finally he reached and began to ascend Mt. Horeb. Elijah was in search of God.
And, according to 1 Kings 19:9 (NKJV), “the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’” Elijah answered with a complaint. I did everything you told me to do, but your people have rejected your covenants and killed your prophets. I’m the only one left in the country, and now they want to kill me too.
Well, the Lord gave Elijah a word. According to verse 12, our Creator spoke to the prophet with a still, small voice. He will speak a word to you as well. Let his Word, living and active, speak to you. Open your Bible and listen.
