  • Retirement feature: retirement expectations
Do you have a vision of finishing your working life, with career achievements and goals safely tucked away, and moving to a more leisurely lifestyle, maybe a home at the sea, spending time with grand kids, eating out a bit more, maybe travelling to see all those places you didn’t have the time while you were working?
Have you considered how realistic those expectations against what you are currently doing financially to secure this?
Michael Avery speaks to Dave Crawford of planning retirement, about what he has found when it comes to people’s expectations of retirement versus the reality. And how to improve the dismal outcomes.

  • Roundtable discussion: Employment Equity Targets: A bridge too far?
Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour has called for public comment on the Employment Equity Amendment Bill. The bill promises a shake-up of the country’s existing employment equity laws and will give the minister of Employment and Labour the power to speed up transformation in specific business sectors. It does this by empowering the minister to set sector-specific employment equity targets across most of South Africa’s major industries. But many businesses say this will have the opposite effect and indeed retard growth and employment.
Michael Avery hosted Thembinkosi Mkalipi, who is Chief Director of Labour Relations inside the Department of Employment and labour; Jonny Goldberg, a leading voice in labour law, Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, CEO at Global Business Solutions; & Gerhard Papenfus, Chief Executive of the National Employers Association of South Africa; for a roundtable debate on the Bill.

  • Education & Training Feature: Hyperion raises scale up funding for tech skills
HyperionDev — a start-up backed by tech giants Google and Facebook and musician Black Coffee — is in the market for fresh funding, seeking to drive expansion in a growing online education platform.
The ‘edtech’ space was bubbling under nicely before Covid but now with the tide out we really saw where the gaps are with regards to online education. HyperionDev, founded by former Google employee Riaz Moola in 2012, offers specialised mentored coding courses and boot camps, both online and on-site at its Johannesburg and Cape Town campuses.
In an environment where fledgling technology firms find it hard to raise capital, Moola and his team are attracting interest.
Moola chats to Michael Avery from London about the phenomenal growth of edtech and why he believes he can take this South African startup to the world.

  • Wealth Feature: Small Caps Offer Opportunity
Small caps on the JSE are bouncing back. The Small Cap Index has outperformed the Mid/Large Cap stock index year-to-date. The JSE Value Index, though slightly lagging the Growth Index so far in 2021, has rallied strongly in the past week and narrowed the year-to-date performance spread by 680bps over the past fortnight.
Anthony Clarke, analyst at SmallTalkDaily Research, runs the rule over Curro and AdvTech and shares why he prefers one over the other.
Why Ascendis minorities have been pulled over the table.
And whether soggy soft commodities recently offer any relief for agri counters.
