Classic Horrors Club

Island oasis or jungle hell?  While Jeff looks for a vacation getaway, Richard is wary... particularly considering the movies we're discussing: Island of Lost Souls (1932), The Twilight People (1972) and The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977).

As if those three aren't enough, club member Steven Turek provides comments for Terror is a Man (1959), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) and Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau (2014).

Don't make us haul you out of the water by your feet.  Row your boat on over to this month's meeting as we call The Classic Horrors Club to order...

Stick around to the end to learn who won last month's contest and these three fabulous prizes:

The Boris Karloff Collection (DVD, courtesy of VCI Home Entertainment)

Guns of the Apocalypse (DVD)

Demon with the Atomic Brain (DVD)

On August 16, 1956, we lost horror legend Bela Lugosi at the age of 73.  As we did with Boris Karloff in Episode 15, we pay tribute to Lugosi by discussing three films representing different stages of his career: Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Return of the Vampire (1943) and the infamous Ed Wood movie, Bride of the Monster (1955).

You're invited to attend this month's meeting for all this, plus our regular features: Old Business, August home video releases, birthdays, anniversaries, TV Terror Guide, and listener feedback.  You can participate, too, by the way; just call:

Join Jeff and Rich in welcoming a special guest at this month's meeting.  When he heard our Dark Shadows episode, Steve Turek was inspired to watch the entire series during 2018.  He finished in only four months... and lived to talk about it, which he does in this episode.  He also shares his Monster Bash experience and joins us in discussing the two Dark Shadows movies:  House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows.

Disclaimer: We experienced some technical difficulties during the first 8 minutes or so of our conversation with Steve.  Please be patient; they are soon resolved.

Jonathan Angarola also calls in live from Monster Bash for some on-the-spot reporting.  He did this by calling and leaving  a message at:

THE CLASSIC HORRORS CLUB PODCAST "REMASTERED"! PRESENTING AN EPISODE FIRST RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2017, WITH IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY (HOPEFULLY)...

It's a daunting task, but Jeff and Richard manage to cover the entire run of the original Dark Shadows (1966-1971) in a little less than 2 1/2 hours.  Run home after school and listen!

On the way, stop at a payphone and leave us some feedback, like Christopher Page and Steve Sullivan did:

THE CLASSIC HORRORS CLUB PODCAST "REMASTERED"! PRESENTING AN EPISODE FIRST RELEASED ON JULY 3, 2017, WITH IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY (HOPEFULLY)...

It's a monster-sized episode (pun intended) as Jeff and Richard report their adventures from Monster Bash and share clips from discussions with VIP guests such as Bert I. Gordon, who, coincidentally, produced and directed this month's movie, The Beginning of the End (1957).  Grab a cup of coffee, take your seats and get ready for a meeting that's a little longer than usual, but that will make you feel like you were there with us...

THE CLASSIC HORRORS CLUB PODCAST "REMASTERED"! PRESENTING AN EPISODE FIRST RELEASED ON JUNE 7, 2017, WITH IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY (HOPEFULLY)...

Jeff and Richard “tear it up” in a discussion of two 1970s thrillers, Willard and Ben.  Are these little guys cute or creepy?  Can they be pets or do they simply carry pestilence?  And do we need to worry about Jeff?  Take your seats as we call this month’s meeting to order… Welcome to the Classic Horrors Club!

On May 13, 2018, we were saddened to hear of the unexpected death of Margot Kidder at the age of 69.  Sure, everyone knows her as Lois Lane, but she's perfectly at home in the podcast because of three of her early films, Sisters (1972), Black Christmas (1974), and The Amityville Horror (1979).  With a little help from their friends*, Jeff and Richard discuss these films and the life of this lovely and amazing actress.

*Thank you Chris Franklin, Christopher Page, Steven Turek, and Jonathan Angarola
