Then The Six Shooter starring Jimmy Stewart, originally broadcast May 27, 1954, 71 years ago, Blood Relations. The brother of Jud Coffin is courting Viola Wilcox, George's sister. George is violently opposed to the idea of blood relations, and there's going to be trouble.

Followed by Suspense, originally broadcast May 27, 1962, 63 years ago, That Real Crazy Infinity.  Two hep jazz musicians come across a machine that can record sounds from the past!

Followed by The Royal Desserts Hour starring Rudy Vallee, originally broadcast May 26, 1938, 87 years ago with guest Judy Canova. "No More Battles," a Memorial Day comedy. Rudy interviews a beloved Yale professor of English literature. The Canova family sing and yodel, "The Ballad Of Jesse James."

Then The CBS Radio Workshop, originally broadcast May 26, 1957, 68 years ago, I Have Three Heads.  A study of the techniques, the possibilities, and the improbabilities of tape recording. An absolutely fascinating exploration of some of the tricks possible with tape recorders, as narrated by an Ampex Tape Recorder. Put together by CBS engineer Mort Goldberg (later an executive), it features a band playing "Tea of Two" forwards and backwards at the same time. 

Finally, Lum and Abner, originally broadcast May 26, 1942, 83 years ago, Phantom Author’s Manuscript.  The Edwards and Edwards Publishing Company receives a "manuscript" from "The Phantom Author."

Then The Lux Radio Theater, originally broadcast May 25, 1942, 83 years ago, Test Pilot starring Robert Taylor, Robert Preston,  and Rita Hayworth. The adaptation of a 1938 motion picture about a a daredevil test pilot, his wife, and his best friend.

Then Arch Oboler’s Plays, originally broadcast May 24, 1945, 80 years ago, An Exercise in Horror starring Peter Lorre.  Complaining that there have been no horror stories on the series thus far, Peter convinces Arch Oboler to "cause goose bumps on a bowling ball.". 

Followed by Have Gun Will Travel starring John Dehner, originally broadcast May 24, 1959, 66 years ago, In an Evil Time. Paladin is hired to bring in the legendary Pappy French, a bank robber with $50,000 hidden away.

Then Yours Truly Johnny Dollar starring Edmond O'Brien, originally broadcast May 23, 1950, 75 years ago, The Earl Chadwick Matter.   Johnny flies to Bermuda to find out if a dead man really is.

Followed by Five After the Hour, originally broadcast May 23, 1945,  80 years ago, The Man Without a Face.   A delightful evening with friends, broadcast 2 weeks after VE Day. Cards, beer and the man of Germany's destiny...Adolf Hitler! A story told in flashback, by a baker in Munich, 11 years after his death.

A Funny Thursday

First a look at the events of the day

Then The final weekly Jack Benny program, originally broadcast May 22, 1955, 70 years ago, Trouble with Twombly. Jack is having trouble with Twombley, the sound effects man. Eugene Twombley was really the name of one of the sound effects men on the program, but Mel Blanc plays the part. The last show of the season, the series and the last regularly scheduled weekly Jack Benny radio show, except for repeats. A funny and touching last show. No mention is made that this is the end of the series, primarily because nobody knew it was!  American Tobacco Company didn’t make the announcement until the final show had aired. The cast discusses plans for the summer. The two CBS telephone operators appear. The program's guest is "Colonel Stoopnagle" (Frederick Chase Taylor), who tells the story of "The Tortoise and The Hare," as Fred becomes a baby sitter. Then The Six Shooter starring Jimmy Stewart, originally broadcast May 20, 1954, 71 years ago, The Shooting of Wyatt King. Who shot the bank robber named Wyatt King? He was also known as, "The Wyoming Kid." Was it the Six-Shooter? Of course!

Followed by Arch Oboler’s Plays, originally broadcast May 20, 1939, 86 years ago, Crazy Town. Two (presumably) Italian aviators crash after a bombing mission. They find themselves imprisoned in a "crazy town."  In a community where all men are mad, no one is mad.

Followed by The Great Gildersleeve starring Harold Peary, originally broadcast May 19, 1946, 79 years ago, Leroy learns how to dance.  Gildersleeve arranges a birthday party for Ethel Hammerschlag, much against Leroy's wishes. Gildy re-enacts an extended conversation he had with his father when he was a young boy.

Then The Martin and Lewis Show, originally broadcast May 19, 1953, 72 years ago,  with guest Fred MacMurray. Dean and Jerry talk about how poor they were when they were growing up. Fred tells the boys about his cattle breeding experiments.  That leads the threesome to do a sketch about the opening of the railroads called “Blackfeet, why are you blue?”
