Drama on a Sunday

Followed by Dragnet starring Jack Webb, originally broadcast October 5, 1950, 75 years ago, The Big .38.  Friday and Romero investigate a series of robberies committed by a gunman wielding a .38 revolver. The suspect has been holding up liquor stores and small businesses, showing no hesitation in using violence.

Then, Philo Vance starring Jackson Beck, originally broadcast October 5, 1948, 77 years ago,  The Bulletin Murder Case.  Vance becomes involved when a newspaper bulletin reports the murder of a prominent man before the crime has actually been committed. Soon after the bulletin airs, the man is indeed found dead, exactly as described.

Followed by Frontier Gentleman starring John Dehner, originally broadcast October 5, 1958, 67 years ago, The Librarian.   A librarian from Boston and a Confederate veteran battle over a homestead in the Dakota Territory. 

Finally, Lum and Abner, originally broadcast October 5, 1942, 83 years ago, New Observatory Named. Abner plans to buy a Mexican jumping bean farm. Lum is going to buy land atop a mountain for an observatory.

Then, Counterspy starring Don MacLaughin and Mandel Kramer, originally broadcast October 4, 1949, 76 years ago, The Case of the Sweepstakes Murder.  Frightened witnesses gasp, "Murdered by a golden sword!"

Followed by Theater Royal starring Sir Lawrence Olivier, originally broadcast October 4, 1953, 72 years ago, Queen of Spades starring Orson Welles.  A man tries to find the three cards that will always win, and kills an old lady to get the secret.  Olivier would star in many of the future programs. 

Finally. Fibber McGee and Molly, originally broadcast October 4, 1954, 71 years ago, Cover Charge.   The McGees have a new slip cover for the living room easy chair. Fibber is relaxing in it...guarding his health.

Followed by The Adventures of Sam Spade starring Howard Duff, Detective starring Howard Duff, originally broadcast October 3, 1948, 77 years ago, The Sugar Kane Caper.  The beautiful Sugar Kane is about to marry into the wealthy Cavanaugh family. 

Then, Dr. Christian starring Jean Hersholdt, originally broadcast October 3, 1945, 80 years ago, Love to Mama.  While an old Italian woman slowly dies, her daughter burns the letters received from her brother, Johnny. She's keeping a deep and painful secret.

Followed by The Adventures of Philip Marlowe starring Gerald Mohr, originally broadcast October 1, 1949, 76 years ago, Tale of the Mermaid.   A traffic accident outside of his office leads Marlowe to a murder on the waterfront and a "mermaid."

Then, The Man Called X starring Herbert Marshall, originally broadcast October 1, 1951, 74 years ago, Invitation to a Murder.  Ken Thurston flies to Chicago to find the missing Jack Doyle and to shut down a source of vicious rumors. 

Followed by Nick Carter Master Detective starring Lon Clark, originally broadcast October 1, 1944, 81 years ago, The Numbers Murder.  A gambler wins at the numbers…and is bumped off before they get home.  There is a suspicion that one of the numbers runners may have knocked off the winner!

Finally, Claudia, originally broadcast October 1, 1947, 78 years ago, The Wedding Presents.  Minerva (the colored maid) learns about "vitamins in love." Claudia and David decide to keep or return the wedding presents.  Kathryn Bard and Paul Crabtree star.

September 30, 1962, the last of the Golden Age of Radio. 

The Final episode of Suspense, broadcast at 7:05pm Sunday, September 30, 1962, 63 years ago, Devilstone.  An Irishman goes to investigate his haunted house, with unexpected results.   Christopher Carey and  Neil Fitzgerald star.

Followed by Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar starring Mandel Kramer, broadcast at 7:35, Sunday, September 30, 1962, 63 years ago.  A convict in the state prison is about to die. He has a final "thank you" for Johnny for helping his kid brother get a start in life. There's still the matter of $100,000 from the convict's last safe robbery.  (That $100K would be over $1.069 Million today!)   Ironically, the gas station kid knew who Johnny Dollar was, but it didn't matter, as CBS ended the show anyway. 

Finally, Orson Welles Commentary, broadcast September 30, 1945, 80 years ago.  The aircheck from KECA Radio (Now KABC) gave listeners a look at what radio would become - a medium of primarily news and commentary.   The broadcast originates from Orson's home in Brentwood. Eddie Cantor introduced a new cast member on his show (Thelma Carpenter) without mentioning that she's colored. What did Eisenhower say to General Patton? We'll never know for sure. Many Roosevelt staffers are leaving the Truman administration. The main British problem is getting enough to eat. Orson answers a critic in Weehawken, New Jersey. He then tells the story of, "Bonito," the fighting bull. It's a great story, told beautifully by Orson.  No doubt, Welles was as good at commentary as he was at acting.

Then, Gunsmoke starring William Conrad, originally broadcast September 30, 1956, 69 years ago, the Brothers.   Young Trace Gore comes to Dodge to gun down Lafe Tugwell, who is a fast man on the draw...or is he?

Followed by Fort Laramie starring Raymond Burr, originally broadcast September 30, 1956, 69 years ago,  A Small Beginning.   Lee Quince and the troop must find Sitting Bull, somewhere in the Black Hills. 

Then, Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch, originally broadcast September 30, 1950, 75 years ago, Caleb Hooten.   Gene tells the story of the time Caleb Hooten mysteriously disappeared and someone else started mining his claim!

Followed by Tales of the Texas Rangers starring Joel McCrea, originally broadcast September 30, 1950, 75 years ago, Clean Up. Murder in the oil field, just the tip of a very dirty iceberg. The story is based on events in Killman, Texas, "several years ago."

Then, Wanted, originally broadcast September 29, 1950, 75 years ago, Gladys Tibbett Glasgow Stewart.  Alvin and Gladys Stewart are both shot by a psychopathic murder in Oklahoma on October 12, 1939. However, Gladys turned out to have a "past."

Followed by The Whistler, originally broadcast September 29, 1948, 77 years ago, Conspiracy. A reporter covering a flood uses the coming disaster to murder his hated ex-wife. The crime is complicated by an eye-witness!

Finally, Claudia, originally broadcast September 29, 1947, 78 years ago, Meet the Naughtons.  The first show of the series. The story is based on characters created by Rose Franken. Claudia and David have moved in with Claudia's mother. Kathryn Bard and Paul Crabtree star.
