Then, Dangerous Assignment starring Brian Donlevy,  originally broadcast November 5, 1952, 73 years ago, Havana.  U.S. agent Steve Mitchell travels overseas on a covert mission to uncover corruption and espionage threatening American interests abroad.

Followed by Nick Carter Master Detective starring Lon Clark, originally broadcast November 5, 1944, 81 years ago,  Death in the Pool.  Nick investigates a baffling murder case involving a mysterious disappearance and a deadly secret hidden behind an ordinary crime.

A Funny Tuesday 

First, a look at the events of the day.

Then, Abbott and Costello, originally broadcast November 4, 1943, 82 years ago with guest Lana Turner.   Abbott and Costello are having trouble getting into the NBC studio before they go on the air. This program is remembered as being broadcast on the day Lou Costello's infant son died by drowning. No mention of this tragedy is made until the very end of the show, when Bud Abbott tells the radio audience what happened. During the program, there was no sign by Costello of anything else on his mind but the next corny joke.  

Followed by The Burns and Allen Show,  originally broadcast November 4, 1941, 84 years ago, Gracie playing Mrs North?   MGM wants Gracie to appear in the new movie to be made about "Mr. and Mrs. North." Gracie's not interested. The locket Paul Whiteman has for his wife complicates the plot. 

Then, The Milton Berle Show, originally broadcast November 4, 1947, 78 years ago, A Salute to Football.   Milton goes to see the "Fighting Irish." 

Followed by The CBS Radio Workshop, originally broadcast November 4, 1956, 69 years ago, Joe Miller’s Joke Book.   A documentary about the history of jokes, including a fictionalized visit from the venerable Joe Miller himself!

Then, Calling All Cars,  originally broadcast November 3, 1938, 87 years ago, The Case of the Portuguese Crooner.    A Portuguese immigrant has been murdered. The trail of the murderer leads to Newark, New Jersey. A melodic voice leads to violence. 

Followed by Danger Dr. Danfield starring Steve Dunne, originally broadcast November 3, 1946, 79 years ago,  Legend of Windago.   A ski instructor's girlfriend is murdered by a "Windago," a mythical creature of the mountains.

Finally. Claudia, originally broadcast November 3, 1947, 78 years ago, Driving Downtown.   Claudia decides to drive downtown.   Kathryn Bard and Paul Crabtree star.

Then, Let George Do It starring Bob Bailey and Virginia Gregg, originally broadcast October 31, 1949, 78 years ago,  Every Shot Counts.  . A movie cowboy asks George to help prevent a murder. George fails, but the prime suspect is blind!

Followed by Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator starring William Gargan, originally broadcast October 31, 1951, 74 years ago, Corpse on Delivery.  Joey Florio has jumped bail and Barrie Craig has been hired to find him. A corpse slows down the search.

One of the most famous radio shows.

The Mercury Theater of the Air, originally broadcast October 30, 1938, 87 years ago.  A modernized adaptation of HG Wells War of the Worlds.  The show was styled as a series of live news bulletins describing a Martian invasion of Earth. Though announced as fiction, the realistic format caused panic among some listeners who believed the invasion was real. The broadcast became one of the most famous moments in radio history and a defining example of the medium’s power.

Next, a rare recording of author HG Wells discussing the broadcast with Orson Welles from October 28, 1940, on KTSA Radio in San Antonio, Texas.  The meeting occurred while both men were in the city for separate lecture engagements—Wells was addressing the United States Brewers Association, and Welles was preparing for a town hall forum.

We close out the show with an episode of Theater Five, originally broadcast October 30, 1964, 61 years ago, The Second Chance.  A middle-aged man discovers the secret of growing backwards...getting younger every year!  

Halloween Parties on a Thursday

Then, The Adventures of Archie Andrews starring Bob Hastings, originally broadcast October 30, 1948, 77 years ago, Halloween Party.   Archie throws a Halloween party and finds it's not as much fun to be the host as it is to be the guest.

Followed by Jack Benny, originally broadcast October 30, 1938, 87 years ago, Jack Gives a Halloween Party.   Jack is throwing a Halloween party for the gang. Rochester's brother September helps out. Phil brings the beautiful Barbara Whitney to the party. 

Then, The Chase and Sanborn Hour with host Don Ameche,  originally broadcast October 30, 1938, 87 years ago with guest Madeline Carroll.   Edgar Bergen tells a ghost story on Halloween.  Madeleine Carroll appears opposite Don Ameche in a romantic drama called, "There's Always Juliet." Judy Canova recounts her first visit to a football game. (This program is noted for being broadcast at the same time as "The War Of The Worlds" was heard on "The Mercury Theatre" on CBS.)
