Classics You Slept Through: Episode 73 - Through the Looking Glass Discussion 2 (Chap. 6 - 12)

We've reached the eighth square, and as promised, we're all queens and there is feasting! Alice has endured a lot in this book - surly eggs, long songs, and many, many poems about fish. How has she coped with all the vexing Looking Glass residents?

We'll discuss it, then wrap both books next week.

Special event notes! We're doing a Disney Alice in Wonderland watch party on Thursday, July 15th at 8pm Eastern. Fire up your own copy of the movie, and come chat with us on Twitch as we watch and discuss how Disney adapted the two books.

Then, the following Thursday, July 22nd, also at 8pm Eastern, we'll be playing the Wyndham Classics Alice in Wonderland game! Join us, and see if we can escape back out of the rabbit hole! Both events will be streamed on our Twitch channel: twitch.tv/CYSTpod

The audio of My Heart and Lute can be found via YouTube, here.

Mere's been feeling a bit under the weather this week, so you'll have to bear with me as I take on reading duties solo. Fair warning, I also attempt to sing in this episode. I am not a singer. Join us Tuesday as we discuss the second half of Through the Looking Glass.

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 71 - Through the Looking Glass Discussion 1 (Chap. 1 - 5)

We're back discussing Through the Looking Glass this week, and debuting a new feature! If you haven't checked out our video discussions on YouTube, you may want to this week, as we go through some of the beautiful original illustrations by John Tenniel.

Also, a minor correction: I referred to the 1985 Alice In Wonderland game as being from Broderbund, when it was published by Windham Classics.

    Classics You Slept Through: Episode 69 - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Discussion 2 (Chap. 7 - 12)

Today we have a very nice episode for you - our first actual book discussion in nearly two months!

We've finished off Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and we'll talk about it, mostly as it mirrors or differs from the 1951 Disney classic. The biggest omission of the movie appears here, as the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon, who are given two full chapters, do not appear in the movie. While, they were in some early drafts of the script, they weren't fully realized until they appeared in a commercial for Jell-O in the 1950s.

No wrap for this yet. We're going to roll directly into Through the Looking Glass.

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 68 - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Chapters 7 - 12)

WE ARE BACK!! Our long collective nightmare is finally over. Classics You Slept Through is back in your podcast feed!

Kyle's fought through some audio technical difficulties, as well as an increased work schedule, and we finally have the pod back on track.

Today we're finishing Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. As you'd expect, it's full of iconic scenes such as the Mad Hatter's tea party and playing croquet with the Queen of Hearts, but we'll also meet the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle, sadly left out of the Disney version - though they were designed and appeared in a commercial for Jell-O.

Classics You Slept Through: Bonus Episode 5 - 2BRØ2B

It's Classics You Slept Through's one year anniversary! (Yeah, we can't believe it, either...) To celebrate, we're doing a live read of the Kurt Vonnegut short story, 2BRØ2B. It's a harrowing look at pristine and controlled future, where the tranquility and prosperity comes at a terrible price.

Thank you, sincerely, to all of our listeners for this past year. Mere and I have enjoyed reading to you and with you, discovering some gems, and finding things to talk about even in the most difficult of books. We hope you've been enjoying this reading journey and look forward to bringing you many more books in the coming year!

Here's to 2021, and all the reading that it holds for you!

  • Classics You Slept Through: Episode 65 - The Picture of Dorian Gray Wrap-Up

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 65 - The Picture of Dorian Gray Wrap-Up

Today we're summing up our thoughts on Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

This was a bit of a tougher one to wrap up quickly. There's a story there, but it's pretty simple and almost secondary to the deeper things that Wilde wants to convey. We probably didn't hit all the points by half, so share what you saw and how you took this strange tale of Dorian and his sin absorbing picture.

The article from Time which Mere references this episode can be found here.
