  • Episode 4: What you need to know about chemical vs physical sunscreen with Christina Ross

Have you ever found yourself standing amidst the sunscreen options, gazing at shelves brimming with choices, and pondering, "Which sunscreen is the right choice for me? What sets apart physical zinc sunscreen from chemical sunscreen, and are the chemicals truly detrimental to my health? Do they pose a threat to coral reefs?"

While it's crucial to wear sunscreen for skin cancer prevention, the challenge lies in selecting a sunscreen that not only offers confidence in safety but also provides effective sun protection.

Today’s guest, Christina Ross, is going to help us answer these questions and so much more. Christina is a senior scientist with Credo Beauty who has spent much of her career looking at the safety and regulatory landscape of consumer products, including sunscreens.

Christina will guide us through understanding the disparities between physical and chemical sunscreens. She'll address safety concerns associated with chemical sunscreens and help us tackle the essential question: How do we choose a sunscreen that prioritizes safety?

  • Episode 2: What you need to know about Clean Beauty with Mia Davis and Christina Ross

There are thousands of chemicals used in personal care products. These chemicals are in lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, skincare and makeup, and the majority have never been tested for human health and safety. No matter your gender or age, you are being exposed to these chemicals and they could be having a negative impact on your health.  In the US there is no requirement for pre-market testing of ingredients to determine their safety and very little government regulation to protect us as consumers.

So, how do you know who to trust, and how can you ensure you are choosing safer products? That is what you will learn in today’s episode. My guests are Mia Davis and Christina Ross, two experts with a passion for safer ingredients and greater regulation in the beauty industry. Mia is a clean beauty pioneer who created and implemented some of the leading standards in the industry, including The Credo Clean Standard and Beautycounter’s Never List. Christina is Senior Scientist at Credo Beauty where she is responsible for product and ingredient safety.

Mia and Christina are here to help us understand the landscape of chemicals, lack of safety data and regulation in the beauty industry, and the most valuable thing you will walk away with from today’s episode is what you can do to make safer choices for you and your family.

  • Episode 109: Why Every Choice Matters with Eliza Caplan

Sometimes you can do all the things to protect your health; sleeping well, exercising, eating a health diet using safer products, and you still get sick, you still get cancer. That is the story of today’s guest, Eliza Caplan. While cancer is a part of Eliza’s story, it is not what defines her.

Eliza is a passionate educator and advocate for clean living. She has spent the majority of her adult life making choices that are not only healthier for her but also for the health of animals and the planet. In June of this year, Eliza was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer, and in this episode she is sharing her journey.

Whether you're at a crossroads in your own health journey, supporting a loved one through cancer or another disease, or even someone who is questioning the importance of making safer choices altogether,  this conversation will inspire you to believe that these small choices and actions do in fact matter. That you do have control of your life and your health, even when you think you don’t.

    About Eliza

From a young age, Eliza Caplan was drawn to nature and her passion for animals. She connected with the most vulnerable and ones who couldn’t speak out for themselves. After having children, she stayed home to care for them but continued her work for people, animals and the planet through different actions. As she learned more about health and planet, she transitioned her family to a more plant-based diet and even vegan for a period of time. In 2016, she went back to work. In order for her to spend time on it, it had to have a great mission. After being introduced to Beautycounter through a friend she joined the mission to help share things she hadn’t previously known. Her business and social action work grew. In 2021, she and her husband moved their family of 5 from Chicago, where they had always lived, to Scottsdale AZ. They were in search of warmer weather, something new, and having the mountains a bit closer to them. In 2023, she was shocked to learn from an MRI that she had a brain tumor. Since then she has undergone a craniotomy with tumor resection, radiation and chemotherapy. In her journey, she has looked deeper into the cause and ways to heal more holistically than just the standard of care. She enjoys sharing what she has learned along the way in the effort to change someone else’s life for the better.

This is the first of 4 episodes that will cover people and companies trying to make the highly toxic and wasteful beauty industry safer and more sustainable.

With every skincare product, JunkTheory strives to enable deeper connections to nature, and inspire a movement to eliminate toxic packaging.
