  • ARE OUR LEADERS JUST "ACTING " ON CLIMATE?
The Climate Action Show  - August 9th 2021Produced by Vivien LangfordARE OUR LEADERS JUST "ACTING "ON CLIMATE?Episode 3 Exploring "The Ministry for the Future" by Kim Stanley Robinson Guests:Mark Spencer - Podcaster and Founder of Climactic CollectiveMeg Clancy - Actor, Dancer and  Major Contributor to NITVLyn Bender - Psychologist and former Manager of Lifeline Melbourne Hope lies beyond latest climate shock therapy (eurekastreet.com.au)Greta Thunberg - Founder of Fridays for Future and Cassandra to the Climate Movement  (229) Austrian World Summit 2021 - Greta Thunberg Speech - YouTubeKim Stanley Robinson and Naomi Klein at Rutgers University Institute for  Earth, Ocean and Atrmospheric Sciences.Kim Stanley Robinson Special Event - Rutgers EOASMusic "Nada:" a tango from La Tabu. This is a theatrical and intense episode. We use KS Robinson's novel as a springboard to explore the themes of being overwraught with insufficient leadership. What are the  many ways forward? It starts with a dramatised reading of the chapter where the head of the ministry, Mary Murphy, is kidnapped by Frank. He is a man traumatised by the great Indian heatwave which left millions dead. As he paces her Zurich apartment she thinks"His presence in her kitchen was all too much like one of her insomniac whirlpools of thought, as if she had stumbled into one of her nightmares while still awake, so that she couldn't get out of it."Then the actors and I discuss with psychologist Lyn Bender how leaders must  accept these messengers from the climate frontlines and act with urgency, while remaining confident and resolute that we can repair the damage. The second item is Greta Thunberg at the 2021 Vienna Climate Summit. She tells leaders that they are pretending to change, pretending to take the science seriously, pretending to wage war on fossil fuels while opening up new oil pipelines, gas fields and coal mines. She says " The audience has grown wary, the show is over"Thirdly we go to Rutgers University to hear the author, Kim Stanley Robinson , talking about  the hard things he had to say. The needle in the eye moments. Naomi Klein calls him a "possibilist" and talks about the sort of dystopian and escapist narratives we are  hard wired  for.  Are we fascinated by the billionaires aiming to colonise space because we were brought up on Noah's Ark? (229) Why Jeff Bezos’ Space Dream is Humanity's Nightmare | George Monbiot - YouTubeWe learn about geo-engineering, how capitalism must change and how modern monetary theory can be used for good. If  you haven't read the novel yet do try now. It is an easy way to look at the future and all the paths we could follow once we wake up.Breaks for tango dancing courtesy of La Tabu.  Breaking news after our broadcast. Here are some Greenpeace responses to the latest IPCC report launched at 6pmJoseph Moeno-Kolio, Greenpeace Head of Pacific, said:“The IPCC’s latest report leaves no doubt that the fossil fuel companies actively driving the climate crisis need to be stopped if Pacific people are to have any chance of living in safety and with some measure of dignity.”“The climate change genie can’t go back into the bottle. It’s too late to reverse so much of the damage the mining and burning of coal, oil and gas have already done to our beautiful islands but the world needs to do everything in its power to stop the climate crisis before it ends our entire way of life.”“There is a more than 50 per cent likelihood that 1.5 degrees of warming will be exceeded by the early 2030s under all scenarios. For a region already suffering the effects of 1.1 degrees of warming, this will be disastrous for our communities, our economies and our cultures.”“Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison met last week with Pacific leaders and committed to supporting the Pacific family. This report has found that if Morrison’s obsession with fossil fuels isn’t immediately ended, these words might one day be nothing more than an empty lament on the family tomb.”“For years, Pacific leaders have been calling on the world to follow the science and act on the causes of global heating. This latest report only further vindicates the awful truth: if we continue to burn fossil fuels, we burn through any chance of a safe, prosperous future.”David Ritter, CEO of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said:“No more excuses and no more delays on climate change. This is decision time for every political and business leader in Australia. This is the issue on which you will be judged by history and by the children of Australia, whose futures are on the line.”“The IPCC Working Group 1 report makes it clear that we are out of control and accelerating towards disaster. Only if we make deep, rapid emissions cuts including the complete phase out of climate-destroying coal, oil and gas do we have a chance of making it to a safer, habitable future powered by clean energy.”“All decisions our leaders make from today must be informed by this knowledge. Any further expansion of our dangerous gas and coal industries is untenable. Australia must close all coal burning power stations by 2030 at the latest.“We could have made emissions cuts decades ago that would have put us on a path to a safer future, but this was blocked by the vested interests of coal, oil and gas and the politicians who have subsidised and protected these big polluters.” “Australia is one of the most carbon intensive economies in the world, making an outsized contribution to the global crisis we face, and our leaders are obstructive in international negotiations.”“As the biggest exporter of coal and gas in the world, Australia’s main export these days is climate damage. Our international trading partners, most of whom are moving rapidly to reduce emissions, will be putting increasing pressure on Australia’s leaders in the lead up to the COP26 Summit in November, with our country increasingly seen as a rogue state on climate.”“If this report makes you feel angry, sad and afraid, that is because it is angering, saddening and frightening. Climate change is not an accident or a force of nature. It is caused primarily by the pollution produced by coal, oil and gas corporations.”“We have a choice. We already have the renewable energy technology to make huge emissions cuts in our electricity system which will put us well on the path to a safer future, with many of our biggest and most trusted businesses already committed to 100% renewable electricity by 2025.”“Now, as pressure builds on Australia’s leaders to reduce emissions, we can put an end to the fossil fuel industry holding the fortunes of our country to ransom and still choose the future we want.”

  • Rehydrating the Earth
Climate Action Radio Show -  July 26th 2021Produced by Vivien LangfordREHYDRATING THE EARTH  Episode 2 on Ministry for the FutureGuests: Michal Kravcik -    People and Water, Slovakia — The Flow PartnershipNicky Chirlian and Craig Carter - Upper Mooki Rehydration Project — NSW Landcare GatewayDidi Pershouse - About - REHYDRATE CALIFORNIA. / (191) Can We Rehydrate California? (Didi Pershouse & Walter Jehne at Paicines Ranch, 2018) - YouTubePeter Vandilevoo - Song Fight for the Trees.Molly - Reading from Ministry for the Future about Rehydrating California Soil carbon sponges, perennial grasses, slowing down creeks, we will find out how rehydrating the land affects the climate crisis. This is episode 2 of our series inspired by Ministry for the Future. There are many climate solutions dramatised by Kim Stanley Robinson and just this week flood waters have been wiping out towns in Northern Europe, India and  Inner Mongolia.Floods - The Watchers. In the novel Molly reads about rehydrating farm lands. I thought I would go back to Water Engineer Michal Kravcik in Slovakia. He is all about permeable pavements and slowing down creeks rather than big dams. Then we talk to Craig Carter about how 13 landholders worked together to rehydrate the Upper Mooki Catchment in Northern NSW. Nicky Chirlian is the chair of the landcare group that implemented regenerative farming prionciples over a wide area.In Vermont Didi Pershouse speaks to us about how all this rehydration has a big role in sequestering carbon. She talks about the soil Carbon sponge which is demonstrated in her video above. She is dedicated to building the sorts of communities that work together and learn from indigenous land carers. Water Protection Action you can take:A vital water source for the Wangan and Jagalingou People is the Doongmabula springs. The Adani Carmichael coal mine will threaten its existence by siphoning out and polluting great volumes of water. Here is a letter from Adrian Burrugubba. Please write an email as he suggests. Friends, I need your support.Today I have written to the Honourable Meaghan Scanlon MP, Minister for Environment, to call for an immediate stop work order on construction of the Carmichael mine.I have asked her to intervene and support our human rights by ensuring that our lands and waters, and our sacred Doongmabulla Springs, are protected from Adani. You can help strengthen our demands. Please write to Minister Scanlon expressing your support for the W&J cultural custodians and our call for immediate action to protect our sacred Doongmabulla Springs. Email her at [email protected] - and please Cc us at [email protected] so we can see your messages too.The Queensland Government has so far failed to address our call for urgent action. We have raised the dire warning about the threat to our sacred springs - a place of profound cultural heritage to us. We fear that the very large volume of water extraction by Adani that is now evident has already locked in future environmental damage to our sacred site. The Department of Environment and Science concluded its investigation into our complaint with “no further action will be taken”, despite the evidence we provided about the harm being done to the Doongmabulla Springs.Adani continues to act with impunity and our lands and waters are in peril. We have raised many times that the Adani mine breaches our human rights - as there was no free, prior, and informed consent for the issuing of the mining leases - and that our lands and waters are in peril. The Government is now responsible for the terrible impacts occurring on our Country and to our sacred sites. You can help us change this. We have asked the Minister to meet with us and ensure four things happen. Let her know you support -A ‘Stop Work’ on the mine until our sacred Doongmabulla Springs are protectedIndependent verification of the results of the department’s investigation into our complaintA comprehensive, independent, scientific review to help protect the water and the springsThe right of our cultural custodians’ group to hold Adani to account for its destruction of our lands and watersWe must act urgently! The very large volume of water being extracted by Adani is locking in future environmental damage to our sacred site. This can only get worse. Please donate to support the work of the W&J Nagana Yarrbayn Cultural Custodians. We know from experience and history that the consequences for our people will be severe, causing ongoing loss of connection to Country and to our culture, intergenerational trauma, grief, and psychological harm. Our culture is inseparable from our lands and waters, including groundwater. Where the groundwater flows to the surface, at the Doongmabulla Springs, is our most sacred site. Mining our land and extracting our groundwater denies us our right to enjoy, maintain and protect our culture and traditional stories. We need you to help ensure that we are not subjected to forced destruction of our culture. We are building new legal arguments to defend our human rights and protect the water. Please help us in this work.We need your support to bring new legal challenges to defend our human rights. With your support we will pursue all avenues to protect our cultural rights and our lands and waters. To see more about the W&J cultural custodians and how we are standing our ground, visit our website and FaceBook page. Yours for Country. Adrian BurragubbaWangan and Jagalingou tribal leader& W&J Nagana Yarrbayn senior cultural custodian

  • MINISTRY FOR THE FUTURE
CLIMATE ACTION SHOW - JULY 19TH 2021PRODUCED BY  Vivien LangfordMINISTRY FOR THE FUTUREEpisode 1 - HEATWAVES(161) Gravitas: Canada heatwave: 1 Billion sea animals dead - YouTubeThe Marine Heatwave washing up millions of  clams, star fish and mussels dead on the beaches of Vancouver prompted me to call Alex Smith, the host of Radio Ecoshock. Then I called David Rovics about his new  song "116degrees in Portland Town". We discuss why the connection between our exported coal and gas and their exported oil and tar sands is not made front and centre in the present tragedy.Their raw response illustrates the urgent question motivating KIm Stanley Robinson's novel: What will motivate us to take the necessary climate action?   We start with Mark Spencer reading an extract from the first chapter of Ministry for the Future. He takes us to India, where the combination of heat and humidity creates a tragedy, which leaves the hero traumatised. The political effect of millions of deaths prompts a change of government .Lizzy Maddox reads part of  the chapter where a pilot describes his seven months of aerosol spraying to create something like the effect of  a Mt Pinatubo Volcanic eruption. This is speculative fiction, but in the current crisis we need  to draw on the imagination as well as the science. There are cameo appearances from Kim Stanley Robinson and Dr Liz Hanna. She explains why the combination of humidity and heat , the wet bulb effect, is such a killer. If you like this format of science, fiction and on the ground reporting please let us know at Radio 3CR - 21 Smith St Fitzroy. She cited studies and government reports showing Canada was warming twice as fast as the rest of the world and monthly higher temperatures were being broken three times more frequently than cold temperature records.“I’ve worked with climate projections for 25 years so we knew this was coming: yet it’s still a shocker when you see these records falling in real life in a place you’re from,” she tweeted.
