DH Lawrence and Frieda stayed at Thirroul and they would have loved the celebration of life that XR brings to the contemplation of climate catastrophe. The brass band with its melodramatic funeral march,  the children making tomb stones for lost species and the serious speakers were not at all macabre. In the background you will hear cockatoos screeching home to roost and children pelting across the grass in sack races.Tim Flannery told us that the Earth's climate System sets the deadlines not politicians. He now lives in this community and is energised by the battle ahead, as they make the transition from coal and gas. Mithra Cox talked about being on council and how we must elect climate activists. Her long experience as a musician supporting many causes has given her the courage to be a leader. Craig Peritt from POWA has worked in the mines and has seen the water gushing in from cracks in the riverbeds. His dream is for green steel at Port Kembla. Will Twiggy Forrest make it a reality? He said our role as activists is to be informed, to be constructively angry, smart and well organised. • ONCE YOU KNOW - film makers
CLIMATE ACTION SHOW APRIL 5TH 2021"ONCE YOU KNOW"Produced by Vivien Langford What happens "once you know" about climate change? Two film makers from TFF show us the "spear in the chest moment", when a person with a platform becomes an activist. Once you KnowEmmanuel Cappelin had such a moment when he  realised we are heading for collapse. It is a  grenade word. When it explodes in your mind you need to find out what to do, to be transformed or to remain stuck.   He visits Joanna Macey in USA and Dr Saleemul Huq in Bangladesh. These people have been bravely facing the challenges for decades. He looks at Transition Towns, Citizens' assemblies and direct Action through Extinction Rebellion. It is an intellectually provocative discussion. Emmanuel talks about preparing for the "long future". When we are reeling from local climate shocks and shortages how will we maintain democractic and civilised behaviour? What must we save on the way down? Beyond ZeroNathan Havey film is  Beyond Zero – A feature length documentary from HaveyPro Cinema (beyondzerofilm.com) It brings us the story of a carpet company called " Interface" whose CEO, Ray Anderson, had a "spear in the chest moment" after reading a book by Paul Hawken. Ray saw that  industry needs to achieve far more than sustainability. It needs to sequester carbon, and prevent future environmental damage. In 2019, "the company officially announced the completion of Mission Zero and introduced the next mission, called Climate Take Back; an aggressive new strategy to sequester carbon in their products and make their factories perform the same functions as forests, sustaining and replenishing the ecosystem." Nathan says " You can't mandate a change like that. A cultural transition makes an environmental transformation possible." We talk about the Green New Deal, Biden's climate action promises and the caring economy. He says we "have to bring more people in to design solutions" and offers his film as a part of any Business Curriculum.Teach This Story – Beyond Zero (beyondzerofilm.com)To build a lasting community of workers with a stake in the future here is an online course from HarvardIntrapreneur Accelerator  If there's a tomorrow Song by David Rovics and friends Songbook – David Rovics -Singer/Songwriter

  • WINTON HIGGINS ALBERT CAMUS THE PLAGUE AND LAUDATO SI
March 29th 2021WINTON HIGGINS  ALBERT CAMUS THE PLAGUE AND LAUDATO SIThe story of LE CHAMBON  and how not to be a bystander in the climate emergency.PRODUCED  BY  VIVIEN  LANGFORD  and  ANDY BRITT Music by KAVISHA MAZZELLA  with her new album EMPTY SKY  Winton Higgins is a distinguished writer, Secular Buddhist teacher  and Holocaust scholar. He tells us the story of Le Chambon. In 1940 the writer Camus was sent there for his TB but while writing The Plague, he observed a conspiracy of goodness. The community was committed to saving the lives of many Jewish people and helping them escape to Switzerland. As plague force global emissions in our time are temporarily lessened by flights, cruises and industry being locked down for the COVID 19 pandemic, many are re reading The Plague. Winton discusses the novel with Vivien in terms of what strength we can draw from it as we face the truth of the climate emergency in our generation. He also  looks at Laudato Si!  by Pope Francis, to learn how not to displace our moral responsibility... How to be citizens rather than consumers. Naomi Klein warned us in Shock Doctrine, that predatory money will turbo charge the recovery if we let it. Will damaging the biosphere continue to be seen as a necessary trade off as workers are engaged in emissions intensive projects? Will we continue to be bystanders ? Kavisha Mazzella MusicEMPTY SKY (kavisha.com)This discussion is full of practical ideas although it is more philosophical than usual. Please pass the podcast on to friends.

  • Reset 21 Forum BEYOND ZERO 2030
The Climate Action Show22nd March 2021Edited with permission from Reset 21 Forums by Vivien Langford BELOW ZERO 2030EMERGENCY ACTION FOR NEGATIVE EMISSIONSThe dramatic shift in mainstream climate policy in support of a zero-emissions target is widely welcomed. But are we at grave risk of missing our intended outcome by attaching highly dangerous timeframes to this critical goal? The evidence is clear: any further emissions released from now will only jeopardise the ability to address the existential threat of climate change. Current emissions will have ongoing impacts, and temperatures will continue to rise even if all future emissions were prevented today. In addition for the need to address the question of immediate cooling, two actions critical for long-term climate repair include eliminating all further emissions, and large-scale removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. What are the leading tech disruptions, key innovations and economic strategies that could dramatically accelerate the transition to zero within the decade? What elements could make up an effective global drawdown program at the monumental scale and speed required?Saul Griffith – Founder and Chief Scientist, Rewiring AmericaHeidi Lee – CEO, Beyond Zero EmissionsJustin Borevitz – Professor of Plant Energy Biology, ANUModerated by Natasha Mitchell – ABC Broadcaster & JournalistrK50AJN5cX2Dwzg52fnK

  • Australia the Carbon Pariah
Over this past six months I have been closely watching the news - it has become clear that Australia's backing of fossil fuel exports are becoming increasingly untenable. The US has rejoined the Paris agreement, in October China vowed to reach net zero by 2060 - quickly followed by South Korea and Japan. This Asian tsunami away from coal is a huge proportion of our coal exports which accounted for over 55% in 2018.And where does this position Australia with our reliance coal and the prospect of a gas lead recovery? Tim BuckleyTim Buckley is the Director of Energy Finance Studies at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. Tim is expertly placed to foresee how Australia's energy export prospects are likely to change as our export partners move away from coal and commit to net zero energy targets. Links from interview: Biden's Executive order on Climate change  Ross GarnautProfessor Ross Garnaut has been the most important climate policy strategist in Australia over the past 2 decades. His work reviewing the economics of a carbon price profoundly influenced the policy decision of the Rudd and Gillard governments. His 2019 book Superpower: Australia's Low Carbon Opportunity reframes the exhausted debate on climate change in Australia from necessary sacrifice to economic opportunity. His resent book Reset: Restoring Australia after the Pandemic Recession looks at Australia's recovery post-COVID.Links from interview:Superpower: Australia's Low Carbon OpportunityReset: Restoring Australia after the Pandemic RecessionJolene ElberthJolene Elberth is the Australian Conservation Foundation's Democracy campaigner. Jolene has a deep understanding of how democracy in this country is being undermined by money and influence from various industries - in particular the fossil fuel lobby - how this impacts the decision making process of our politicians.

  • WOMEN'S CLIMATE LEADERSHIP - IWD
WOMEN'S CLIMATE LEADERSHIPWHERE DOES IT TAKE US?8TH MARCH 2021Produced by Vivien LangfordGUESTS:Victoria McKenzie-McHarg - Women's environmental Leadership WELA and Chair of the Climate Action Network Australia CANALucy Manne - CEO of 350.org AustraliaJanet Laurence - Artist and Curator of REQUIEM at the Festival of Sydney 2021Kerrie Leishman - Painter on her exhibition "The New Beauty" featuring wind turbines at Waubra VicMusic : Montaigne with the song that launched the School Strike for Climate in Sydney 2019-  "Ready to Go!"and "Mother earth" composed by Aunty Ruby Sims to launch the Beyond Zero Emissions "Million Jobs Plan" sent to us by Dominque Hes The theme of international Women's day this year is Women in leadership.Victoria McKenzie-McHarg launches the show. Her IWD hero is Julie Lyford who, with Groundswell Gloucester fended off a gas company in their valley and then won a court case to stop the Rocky Hill Coal mine going ahead. Julie is a graduate of the Women's environmental leadership course. Victoria says it's obvious that the present political, societal and corporate leadership is failing on climate action. a more collaborative, diverse and supportive form of leadership is needed. She speaks about  Nicola Rivers who with young children could not see herself as a CEO but through mentoring came to the idea of sharing a CEO position which she now has as CoCEO of Environmental Justice Australia.WELA is there to open doors for women. They have established a giving circle to fund women led projects and initiatives for our envoronment.Women's Environmental Leadership Australia | The Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) program is designed by and for women environmentalists to support women taking environmental leadership in Australia.  sign up for our monthly e-newsletter and join us on Facebook. To celebrate IWD we talk to two artists who lead us towards a change of heart around our connection to the land and  landscape.  They are Janet Laurence and Kerrie Leishman. Janet Laurence curated REQUIEM, a week of art events in an old Reservoir near Paddington Town Hall. As we descend into the sunken cathedral she invites us to lament and reflect on the black summer bush fires. It is a place of reckoning and the audience response in Qand A was all about "what can we do?"Art helps us to see what's invisible and Janet says blindness to nature breeds indifference. In front of her installation of waters made turbid by charcoal and dead matter left by the bushfires, many speakers such as Bruce Shillingsworth, urged us to think differently about mother earth and her lifeblood rivers. In an interview later Janet told me that the Art World did not easily accept her focus on climate change. But she does not want to plunge them into a defensive reaction and the sheer tenderness, the scale and the science behind her work is opening many minds.'I want you to linger': how Janet Laurence's art compels you to save the earth | Art and design | The Guardian Kerrie Leishman says that wind turbines create a new aesthetic. This challenges our usual idea of landscape. But like Janet Laurence she does not want to put us on the defensive. Her paintings are a subtle form of climate leadership taking us along as she comes to see the turbines as gentle giants. Her exhibition called "The New Beauty" was inspired by the wind farms at Waubra in Victoria.blog - Kerrie Leishman Paintings and Illustration Lucy Manne started the fossil Fuel Watch project during COVID. They report  on such things as  the media coverage of COVID recovery funds going  towards gas projects rather than the jobs rich care economy. They also report on the national conversation around citizens' rights to protest. One example recently is when the mining lobby portrayed community groups as "vexatious" Graeme Samuels found that such legal challenges are the "foundation of our democracy". She recommended that we watch the Greenpeace film "Dirty Money" and join 350.org in their campaign to "Fund our Future not Gas".She talks about the shift in energy resulting from the Biden Administration's climate policy in the USA.Will this help us turn a distant 2050 target to a manageable 2030 target for reducing carbon emissions to zero? Her women's day hero is Milly Telford founder of SeedMob. The campaign she wants us to support is the Torres Strait Islanders' landmark human rights complaint against the Australian Government. They say the government has not adequately reduced Greenhouse gas emissions or helped them adapt to changing climate conditions. Lucy herself is a shining example of women's leadership coming up from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and now as CEO.Australia – 350.org’s Fossil Fuel Watch project
