I’m your host, Dion Kapnias and today I was lucky enough to speak with Dr Roma Forbes on the topic of patient education . Roma is a lecturer at the University of Queensland, and also completed her PhD on how to teach students to become better patient educators. We speak about the importance of patient education, how to best deliver it and how to decide what education to deliver. Peter is a specialist sports and exercise physician and has achieved so much in his career, from authoring Brukner and Khans' Clinical Sports Medicine, to working for Liverpool in the Premier league. However his most recent passion has been around diet, including writing his own book on the topic. This was such an interesting discussion and my top 3 clinical pearls are:

1. So many conditions physios see have underlying inflammation; Diet is a hugely influential lifestyle factor that cause and reduce inflammation
2. The key for any diet in the long term is that it has got to keep you full and satisfied! This can be achieved through more emphasis on healthy fats and protein, not carbs and sugar
3. Physios have a great opportunity to educate and influence patients; including giving education and advice around what our patients are eating.

Today I’m joined by Rowan Jobling to talk through his project on hip pain in dancers

Rowan is a fellow 1st year physio with years of experience in dancing, and last year completed his final year uni project on hip pain in dancers, working alongside the Australian Ballet. My top 3 clinical pearls are: 

1. Firstly, due to the extreme ranges of motion at the hip that dancers frequently move in to, building strength in these positions is paramount
2. Secondly, dancers should focus on building strength in hip adduction, flexion, extension and external rotation, and ideally do this at least 2-3 times per week
3. Lastly, dancers bodies are their livelihood, so as physios we play an important role in educating them on the importance of ongoing strength training to prevent injuries. I learnt a lot in this episode and I hope you do too!

Today I’m joined by Dr Alison Grimaldi to break down GTPS. 

Alison is a highly experienced physiotherapist, researcher and educator with extensive skills in the management of hip, pelvic and groin pain. She is one of the most recognised faces in this space so I was thrilled to speak with her. My top 3 clinical pearls are: 

1. Firstly, using a quick battery of tests in palpation, single leg stance, FADER-R, FABER and resisted abduction is a great way to objective assess GTPS
2. Secondly, GTPS often comes as a result of subtle changes in load, and so our subjective history and subsequent education must be really specific and encompass how they are loading their hips throughout the day and not just in exercise 
3. Lastly, exercise is really important for GTPS and should be high load, move through range, and should include a focus on controlling the frontal plane during movements such as squats. Alison was super clear and concise in this episode so I’m sure you’ll get lots out of it!

Today I’m joined by Travis Kluckhenn to talk all things regarding FAI. Trav is a physio of 15 + years who specialises in hip pathologies, who also happens to be my boss. He also does some additional work and mentoring with Clinic Mastery, to help grow and teach other clinicians. His ability to educate and impart wisdom is one of the main reasons why I got him on today and it really shines through in this episode. My top 3 clinical pearls are: 

1. Firstly , FAI is not diagnosed simply from a scan, and the more important aspect to understand and address are the individual’s impairments and loading history , including spikes in their load
2. Secondly, Educating patients on FAI is really important, and should take into account how the individual understands and values each element of the bio-psycho-social model in order to get your message across
3. Lastly, strength work is super important for any person with FAI, however we must gain their trust and belief first by easing them into their rehab. I got so much out of this and I’m sure you will too!

Today I’m joined by Dr Allison Ezzat to dive deep into hip and knee osteoarthritis 

Allison is a physiotherapist and researcher who has also completed a phD in population and public health. Her research has a focus on knee arthritis, whilst she is also a tutor for GLAD Australia. My top three clinical pearls are: 

1. Firstly , education for patients with OA is critical, focussing on topics like how pain doesn’t equal damage, or the importance of loading for cartilage and joint health
2. Secondly, scans are not required to diagnose OA; it can be done from a detailed history, functional tests and strength + ROM testing
3. Lastly, Joint replacements are not a failed result; they are required for some people, however we must educate patients that they are not a silver bullet to overcome hip and knee OA. I hope you enjoy our chat!

Leroy is currently a rehab physio at Footscray Bulldogs in the VFL with a keen interest in strength and conditioning. I was lucky enough to spend a bit of under him on one of my placements; his attention to detail and critical thinking are second to none, and these qualities really shine through in this episode. I learnt so much from this, and my top 3 clinical pearls are:

1. Firstly, 3 really important S+C concepts for new grads are the SAID principle, the Specificity / overload trade off and understanding the role of motor learning when training 
2. Secondly, plyometrics are a great, low equipment training option for not just athletes, but also the general population, which are often neglected in rehab
3. Lastly, It’s super important to firstly determine the right goal for your client, then design your exercise dosage around this. Don’t just automatically assume they need to get stronger! I absolutely loved this and I hope you enjoy!

Mick is an APA titled Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist who specialises in ACL injuries. He co-wrote the Melbourne ACL rehab guide and is truly one of the leading clinicians globally in ACL rehab. Mick’s wisdom shines through in this episode and my top 3 clinical pearls are: 

1. Firstly take the time to reassure your patients, answer their questions and give them a positive outlook on their injury; it’s not a death sentence
2. Secondly, it’s crucial to implement criteria based rehab and not let time dictate your decision
3. The non surgical route for rehab is definitely feasible, however caution should be taken for those who are younger or getting back to cutting sports. I loved our chat and hope you do too!
