Co-parenting Through Separation and Divorce with Dr. David Hill [IEP 140]

Listen Later

Co-parenting is becoming more common these days, but things can get a bit more complicated when the arrangement involves a child with unique needs. On today’s show, we welcome Dr. David Hill, co-author with Dr. Jann Blackstone, of Co-parenting Through Separation and Divorce: Putting Your Children First

Dr. David Hill is a practicing pediatrician and a dad in a blended family, with personal experience in the co-parenting field. We are thrilled to have this conversation that will provide you with insight into the importance of building and maintaining a strong co-parenting relationship in support of helping your children navigate an already difficult time in their lives. Please join us for solid advice and helpful strategies on how collaboration lets everyone win!

Show Highlights:

  • Dr. Hill shares why we must consider the long-term effects of co-parenting on our children.
  • Co-parenting a special needs child does not end when they turn 18.
  • Dr. Hill often sees children whose co-parents are not able to answer simple questions about their child’s health or illness due to a lack of communication with the other parent.
  • There are extra considerations for the special needs child who has co-parents.
  • The stress that comes from a parent’s separation makes it really hard for children to behave and harder for them to learn. Stress is an enormous distractor and the results of this can sometimes be mistaken for ADHD or other disorders. If you’re having a child evaluated for learning or behavioral problems, it’s important for the person doing the evaluation to understand what’s going on at home first.
  • We must be teaching emotional intelligence to our children.
  • If you can praise your co-parent for anything, take advantage of it in front of your child. Dr. Hill provides some great examples!
  • Even in the midst of being worried about our health, finances, justice, inclusion, and racism, and all of the other stressors of life, it’s still a great time to model positive behaviors, because our kids will model that.
