Roque and I were teammates for over three years together with former world and American record holder Mike Barrowman.  Roque was not even in the map to qualify for the Olympics and what he went through training with us made him physically and mentally strong to win the 200 Breaststroke at the 1992 US Swimming Olympic Trials.  Listen to this talk that I can assure you will find it very interesting and with great inside information.

Probably the last Virtual coaches talk this one we had being our 15th one.  It has been an amazing journey that I hope we keep it somehow by finding a time that we can all come together again (not every week) to keep sharing.

Personally, it has been an amazing time of growth as a coach and most important as a person by listening to so many great minds and great thoughts.

Thank you and just keep being open and understanding that there are over 1000 ways to get to the same place and you probably have the right formula in your mind if you trust yourself and stay the course.

Muchas gracias a nuestro compañero Alfonso por compartir esta manera innovadora de hacer sus calentamientos con sus nadadores y pensando en como protegerles de lesiones y también como mejorar su postura corporal para que tenga una mayor mejora en el agua a nivel técnico y de tiempos.

Hoy compartí y expliqué el diseño del plan de temporada 2019-20 para mi equipo de natación en la Universidad Virginia Tech. Explico en la presentación que así es como comenzamos la temporada, pero seguro que si analizo ahora veré muchos cambios que ocurrieron de manera dinámica durante toda la temporada.

Probablemente sea una forma diferente (no mejor o peor) de hacer un plan de temporada, pero al menos una forma de organizarse y eso tiene sentido para mí y para el cuerpo técnico de Virginia Tech.

El plan de esta temporada es una evolución a través de mis experiencias en los últimos 25 años de entrenador, que comenzaron de una manera muy tradicional de planificación, como aprendí en 1994 cuando obtuve mi certificación de entrenador superior en España.

Espero que hayan disfrutado y, por favor, sepan que esta es la forma en que creo que los entrenadores deberían planificar. Es solo mi camino lo que tiene sentido para mí y me permite seguir evolucionando.

Virginia Tech Swimming Season Plan 2019-20

Season Design

Today I shared and explain the design of the 2019-20 season plan for my swim team at Virginia Tech University.  I explain in the presentation this is how we started the season but for sure if I analyzed now I will see many changes that happened in a dynamic way throughout the season.

It is probably a different (not better or worse) way of making a season plan but at least a way to be organized and that makes sense for me and the coaching staff at Virginia Tech.

This season plan is an evolution through my experiences these past 25 years of coaching, that started in a very traditional way of planning, the way I learned in 1994 when I got my coaching certification in Spain.

Hope you enjoyed and please by know means this is the way I think coaches should plan.  It is just my way that makes sense to me and allows me to keep evolving.

Velocity Based Training (VBT)

Personally, I had no clue what Velocity based Training was and now I am very happy that I was introduced to this concept and way of training.  The concept is very similar to the way I have been doing my dry-land and conditioning program, so very excited to see the similarities.

The presentation was done by Borja Rey that he is a swim coach in Spain and also, he spent few months doing practical training with our Virginia Tech swimming Team and also our post grad/professional group Pinnacle Racing.  Very interesting and a great learning experience.  The pdf file of the presentation is below at the end. Tengo que pedir perdón ya que se me paso el grabar esta Charla con los entrenadores de habla hispana.  Pero aquí esta ya Borja dio la charla también en ingles, pero el hablo en español y yo la traduje lo mejor que pude 😉.

Esta charla es sobre Velocity Based Training (VBT) que es muy interesante concepto para la natación cuando entrenamos las pesas o el seco.  Yo no tenia ni idea de este concepto, pero me alegro de que Borja lo presentara ya que le veo muchas similitudes con el trabajo en seco que llevo realizando desde hace más de veinte años.

College Recruiting (USA) – Steps to a Successful Recruiting.

Today I shared a presentation to try to educate the club coaches overseas about the NCAA and recruiting rules and process.  Very productive presentation and talking session that I believe gave a good prospective of the process and how they can help their swimmers find a University/College in the USA to become student-athletes and to continue with their pursue of academic and swimming excellence.
