International Women’s Day is everywhere this time of year, and with it comes a lot of campaigns, slogans and well-meaning messages. One that caught my attention this year was the theme “Give to Gain.”
But the more I thought about it, the more questions it raised.
Because when I hear that phrase, it sounds like women should give more in order to gain something back. And honestly, women already give a lot. Their time, energy, emotional labour and commitment in so many areas of life.
In this episode, I unpack the idea behind the “Give to Gain” campaign, why it doesn’t quite sit right with me and how this conversation shows up in the world of netball.
From grassroots clubs to performance environments, netball is a sport that has largely been built on the dedication of women: players, coaches, volunteers, organisers and leaders who keep the game going week after week.
So instead of asking women to give more, maybe the better question is this:
What would happen if we started investing in the women who have already given so much to the sport?
If you’re a netballer, coach or someone who cares about women staying in sport for longer, this episode will definitely get you thinking.
Tune in as I talk about equality, value, and why women shouldn’t have to prove their worth in order to deserve support.
