The Opposition has welcomed the government's $12 billion pledge for its AUKUS defence hub in Western Australia, but says it's come too late.

The Henderson defence site south of Perth will cost $25 billion over 10 years, and will be used to build surface vessels and dry dock submarines for maintenance
