  • The farmer and his horse

The story The Farmer and the Horse retells the classic ancient Chinese fable "The Old Man at the Fort Losing His Horse" (塞翁失马,焉知非福). Through the wise man's calm and unruffled attitude toward the loss and return of his horse, it teaches that we should not judge events purely by their immediate, surface appearance as good or bad.

    Plot Summary

The Horse Runs Away: The old farmer's horse runs off. The neighbors commiserate, calling it bad luck, but the farmer simply replies, "Maybe, we'll see."

The Horse Returns with Wild Horses: A few days later, the escaped horse returns, bringing several wild horses with it. The neighbors congratulate him on his great fortune, but the farmer remains calm, saying again, "Maybe."

The Son Breaks His Leg: While trying to tame one of the wild horses, the farmer's son falls and breaks his leg. The neighbors consider this a terrible misfortune, yet the farmer remains unfazed.

Exemption from Conscription: Soon after, war breaks out. All the young men in the village are drafted into the army, but the son is spared because of his broken leg, ultimately saving his life.

Core Moral Most readers reach a consensus that the story conveys a fundamental truth: good and bad fortune are interdependent. A temporary setback may bring unexpected blessings, just as a stroke of luck can lead to misfortune. Therefore, one should maintain a calm and detached mindset when facing life's ups and downs.

  • The icy tent

Eleven-year-old Keisha and her 43-year-old father, Mr. Jones, arrived at a beautiful mountain lake in the jungle carrying heavy backpacks to set up camp after a long hike.

A Sudden Chill: Late at night, the temperature plummeted. Keisha woke up freezing and shone her flashlight around, surprised to find a layer of ice forming on the inside walls of the tent. This moment gives the book its title, The Icy Tent. [1]

Science Woven Through the Story (The Three States of Matter)

Through conversations between Keisha and her father, the story vividly explains how water molecules change states:

Evaporation & Gas: When her father boils water on the camping stove during the day, he explains that boiling water turns into a gas (water vapor) and rises into the air.

Condensation & Liquid: As people breathe inside the tent, they exhale warm water vapor. When this warm vapor touches the freezing-cold tent fabric at night, it condenses into tiny liquid droplets.

Freezing & Solid: Because the temperature outside the tent drops so low in the middle of the night, those small droplets on the inner walls eventually freeze into solid ice.

  • Sinkhole science

It mainly introduces the cause, types, formation process of the peculiar natural phenomenon known as sinkholes, as well as its impact on human life.

    Definition and Appearance:

Sinkholes are a peculiar natural phenomenon on Earth. They vary in size and look like huge holes in the ground. They can appear very suddenly or form gradually over time. Causes of Formation:

Sinkholes mostly occur in areas with limestone, salt beds, or carbonate rocks. Groundwater slowly dissolves the rock, forming underground caverns. When the ground above the cavern can no longer support the weight, it collapses.

    Types and Impacts:

Some sinkholes are dry, while others fill with water to become beautiful ponds or lakes. Some happen in the wilderness, whereas others suddenly appear on city streets or under homes, posing great danger. Scientific research helps people predict and prevent sinkholes, minimizing potential damage.
