Author Vicky Joy Anderson joins the show to break down sleep paralysis, a lifelong experience she turned into her book They Only Come Out at Night: Exposing the Dark Weapon of Sleep Paralysis. Vicky explains how mainstream explanations for sleep paralysis often come from people who have never experienced it themselves, and argues that UFO encounters, cryptid sightings, and sleep paralysis attacks may be far more connected than researchers in each separate field tend to admit. The conversation covers the hag, the hatman, and other recurring entities reported worldwide, a theory on why these episodes may be deliberately timed to catch people at their most vulnerable, why calling on the name of Jesus reportedly stops many attacks, and how remote viewing and interdimensional entities may explain some of the encounters people write off as dreams. Vicky is the author of They Only Come Out at Night: Exposing the Dark Weapon of Sleep Paralysis.
In This Episode• Author Vicky Joy Anderson has experienced sleep paralysis since early childhood, with her first strong memory of it at just four years old. For most of her life she assumed no one else went through it, and one attempt to explain it to a friend in high school ended with the friend's mother wanting to send an exorcist to her house, so she stopped talking about it entirely.
• Vicky always intended to be a writer, and sleep paralysis eventually found its way into her work when she was assigned a two part magazine article on the topic. Digging into the research, she realized how little solid information actually existed, and how much of what circulates online comes from writers who have never personally experienced an episode, often reducing it to outdated explanations like simple sleep disorders.
• A recurring theme of the conversation is how UFO research, cryptid sightings, and sleep paralysis tend to be treated as completely separate fields, even though the entities and experiences described overlap constantly. Vicky references the opening of Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu, which describes fragmented, disconnected knowledge eventually coming back together, as a fitting description of what she believes is happening across paranormal research right now.
• The conversation turns to remote viewing, the reported ability to project one's awareness to another location, used differently across military and occult contexts. Vicky explains that waking up to see someone familiar and still living standing in your room isn't necessarily a demon or a dream, but she believes accomplishing remote viewing still requires the involvement of an entity empowering the person doing it.
• Rather than getting stuck on whether these visitors are Nordics, reptilians, alien grays, demons, or Nephilim, Vicky argues the more urgent point is simply acknowledging that something real and often spiritual is happening to enormous numbers of people worldwide, with strikingly consistent details across totally unconnected accounts.
• Vicky lays out a theory that sleep paralysis attacks may be deliberately timed, arguing that a state of physical paralysis paired with drowsy, disoriented thinking is exactly when a person is least able to defend themselves, whether the threat is spiritual or otherwise.
• She notes that a striking number of people, religious or not, report that calling out the name of Jesus during an episode causes it to stop immediately, though she's careful to note it isn't a guaranteed fix every time. She compares it to the instinctive reaction people have in an unrelated crisis, like an unexpected car accident, regardless of their religious background.
• Vicky closes out describing some of the most commonly reported entities tied to these episodes: shadow men, glowing red eyes, and seductress figures that shift into winged, demonic forms. She jokes that skeptics are welcome to call the physiological side of it sleep apnea, but once a figure resembling the grim reaper shows up in the room, it's time to admit something spiritual is going on.

Best Line of the Night "If you want to call this sleep apnea, that's fine, but when the grim reaper shows up, let's admit it's spiritual." Vicky, on where the physiological explanation stops making sense.
