Video games—and the people who make them—are in trouble. An estimated 10,500 people in the industry were laid off in 2023 alone. This year, layoffs in the nearly $200 billion sector have only gotten worse, with studios axing what is believed to be 11,000 more, and counting. Microsoft, home of the Xbox and parent company to several studios, including Activision Blizzard, shuttered Tango Gameworks and Alpha Dog Games in May. All the while, generative AI systems built by OpenAI and its competitors have been seeping into nearly every industry, dismantling whole careers along the way.

But gaming might be the biggest industry AI stands poised to conquer. Its economic might has long since eclipsed Hollywood's, while its workforce remains mostly nonunion. A recent survey from the organizers of the Game Developers Conference found that 49 percent of the survey’s more than 3,000 respondents said their workplace used AI, and four out of five said they had ethical concerns about its use.

Jurors in the New York criminal trial against former President Donald Trump have convicted him of 34 felony counts of falsified business records.

Former President Donald Trump appears for his hush money trial at Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday, before a jury of New Yorkers convicted him on 34 felony counts.

The jurors said they unanimously agreed that Trump falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Major IT outages have hit industries across the world after a CrowdStrike update issue pushed global IT systems offline and prevented Windows systems from starting up.

Flights are grounded in airports around the world, hospital systems are offline, and global TV channels and news broadcasters have been taken off air as a result of the incident.

Everything from banks and payment systems in supermarkets is also offline, and companies from a range of industries have said that they would also see delays and technical issues throughout the day.

Tracking website Down Detector has registered outages and problems from companies from a range of different industries around the world: Delta Airlines, Visa, Mastercard, Lloyds Bank, Santander, Amazon, RyanAir, Sky News, Ladbrokes, BT, and Microsoft Teams all show issues. It’s not yet known whether all of them are linked to the problem with PCs.

Many of the UK’s NHS systems are also offline. In a statement, the health service blamed the outage on an issue with EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, which is disrupting the majority of GP practices.

"The NHS has long-standing measures in place to manage the disruption, including using paper patient records and handwritten prescriptions, and the usual phone systems to contact your GP."

"There is currently no known impact on 999 or emergency services, so people should use these services as they usually would."

Amazon is now monitoring the hours corporate employees spend in the office. This move is intended to crack down on people who are trying to skirt the company's return-to-office policy, Business Insider has learned.

Several teams across Amazon, including the retail and cloud-computing units, were told in recent months that a minimum of two hours per visit is required to count as office attendance, according to multiple screenshots of internal Slack messages obtained by BI and people familiar with the matter. Some teams have been told to stay at least six hours per visit.

The Big Tech giant disbanded the DEI team at the beginning of the month due to “changing business needs,” according to a July 1 email obtained by Business Insider.

It is unclear how many employees were affected.

MILWAUKEE, July 16 (Reuters) - Donald Trump's choice of J.D. Vance for a running mate raised the hopes of Silicon Valley conservatives on Tuesday that they stand to gain having a fellow "tech bro" within reach of the White House for the first time.

"WE HAVE A FORMER TECH VC IN THE WHITE HOUSE. GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH BABY," Delian Asparouhov, a partner at billionaire investor Peter Thiel's venture capital firm Founders Fund, wrote on social media site X.

Author of the bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," a graduate of Yale Law School and later a venture capitalist in San Francisco, Vance has had a rapid ascent for American politics.

At 39, he has served but two years in the U.S. Senate representing the state of Ohio.

The Republican National Convention on Monday formally nominated Trump and Vance as their ticket in the Nov. 5 election to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Some right-leaning investors began re-circulating old tweets of Vance's and set their sights on friendlier regulations ranging from artificial intelligence to cryptocurrency.

"He has a direct line to some important influencers as he's evaluating or thinking through some of the policy around tech," said Matt Murphy, a partner at venture capital firm Menlo Ventures, noting the traditional gap between Washington and Silicon Valley.

July 13 (Reuters) - OpenAI whistleblowers have filed a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, calling for an investigation over the artificial intelligence company's allegedly restrictive non-disclosure agreements, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

"Given the well-documented potential risks posed by the irresponsible deployment of AI, we urge the Commissioners to immediately approve an investigation into OpenAI’s prior NDAs, and to review current efforts apparently being undertaken by the company to ensure full compliance with SEC rules," according to the letter, which was provided to Reuters by the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley.

The AI company allegedly made employees sign agreements that required them to waive their federal rights to whistleblower compensation, according to the letter.

The whistleblowers requested the SEC to fine OpenAI for each improper agreement made to the extent the agency deemed appropriate.

Generative AI is everywhere these days, but Amazon Web Services has been perceived in some circles as being late to the game. In reality it’s still early, and the market is still shaking out. On Wednesday, AWS might have raised its generative AI street cred with a new tool called App Studio.

App Studio promises to help you create an enterprise software application from a written prompt. That’s correct: You simply describe the program you want, and AWS says it will write the code for you without the need for any professional developers.

“App Studio is for technical folks who have technical expertise but are not professional developers, and we’re enabling them to build enterprise-grade apps,” Sriram Devanathan, GM of Amazon Q Apps and AWS App Studio, told TechCrunch.
