In Japan, a Change.org petition has surfaced to ban Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It has now been a fair few weeks since Ubisoft lifted the lid on this year’s Assassin’s Creed title, announcing a dual protagonist adventure set in Feudal Japan – a setting that fans have been desperate to experience for many years.

However, Japanese fans of the franchise were quick to voice their disappointment and concern about the game, with the most extreme claims suggesting that Ubisoft is floating racism and severe historical inaccuracy in Shadows, which is set to be released in November.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has spoken out about "malicious and personal online attacks" that have been directed at his employees and partners, citing it as one of his major concerns in the games industry at the moment.

Guillemot gave a wide-ranging interview that was posted on the Ubisoft website on Thursday, speaking about various topics including the future of Assassin's Creed, XDefiant, and more. He was also asked what dismays him about the industry currently, and pointed specifically to online harassment in response.

"One thing I am concerned about right now is the malicious and personal online attacks that have been directed at some of our team members and partners," Guillemot said. "I want to make it clear that we, at Ubisoft, condemn these hateful acts in the strongest possible terms, and I encourage the rest of the industry and players to denounce them, too."

Late last week, both Bloomberg and The Washington Post published stories focused on the ostensibly disastrous impact artificial intelligence is having on the power grid and on efforts to collectively reduce our use of fossil fuels. The high-profile pieces lean heavily on recent projections from Goldman Sachs and the International Energy Agency (IEA) to cast AI's "insatiable" demand for energy as an almost apocalyptic threat to our power infrastructure. The Post piece even cites anonymous "some [people]" in reporting that "some worry whether there will be enough electricity to meet [the power demands] from any source."

Digging into the best available numbers and projections available, though, it's hard to see AI's current and near-future environmental impact in such a dire light. While generative AI models and tools can and will use a significant amount of energy, we shouldn't conflate AI energy usage with the larger and largely pre-existing energy usage of "data centers" as a whole. And just like any technology, whether that AI energy use is worthwhile depends largely on your wider opinion of the value of generative AI in the first place.

Dr. Disrespect—aka Guy Beahm—has been in the news again, nearly four years after he was banned from Twitch in 2020, the online streaming platform where he made a found fame and notoriety. Now it sounds like the popular streamer may be calling it quits indefinitely.

The reason for the ban was never revealed by Twitch or Dr. Disrespect, though the latter took the streaming platform to court over the ban, while the former paid out Beahm’s contract. Years passed. History became legend. Legend became myth.

Then, on June 22nd, 2024 former Account Director of Strategic Partnership at Twitch, Cody Conners, tweeted “[Dr. Disrespect] got banned because [he] got caught sexting a minor in the then-existing Twitch whispers product. He was trying to meet up with her at TwitchCon. The powers that be could read in plain text.”

Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is currently being reviewed poorly by some players who believe that it’s just too hard compared to the base game, and their high level characters keep getting 2-3 shot while they do minimal damage in response.

Well, Bandai Namco, the game’s publisher, has come out with some extremely blunt advice to rectify the problem:

The Scadutree blessing, of course, is upgraded through finding Scadutree Fragments around the map which increases your attack and defense significantly in the Shadow Realm only. Revered Spirit Ashes do the same for your summons.

Without question, this, not level, not gear, not NG+ level, not anything has more of a factor in how hard you hit and how much damage you take than Scadutree blessing level, and after just 24-48 hours since release, I refuse to believe that people are powered up enough to take on some of the content they’re trying.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has pledged to “get smartphones out of schools.”

“I look forward to working with the Legislature to restrict the use of smartphones during the school day. When children and teens are in school, they should be focused on their studies — not their screens,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Newsom plans to work with the California legislature to pass those restrictions by August, Politico first reported. That would put California in line with other states that already have strict limits on smartphone use in schools. The move could also be particularly meaningful in California, the nation’s most populous state and home to Silicon Valley.

Shares of the chipmaker climbed 3.5% to $135.58, lifting its market capitalization to $3.335 trillion, just days after overtaking iPhone maker Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab to become the second most valuable company.

Microsoft's stock market value was $3.317 trillion as its shares dipped 0.45%.

Apple's stock slipped over 1%, leaving its value at $3.286 trillion.

Nvidia's stunning surge in market value over the past year has become emblematic of a Wall Street frenzy driven by optimism about emerging AI technology.
