Microsoft’s producing a lot more planet-heating pollution now than it did when it made a bold climate pledge back in 2020. Its greenhouse gas emissions were actually around 30 percent higher in fiscal year 2023, showing how hard it could be for the company to meet climate goals as it simultaneously races to be a leader in AI.

Training and running AI models is an increasingly energy-hungry endeavor, and the impact that’s having on the climate is just starting to come into view. Microsoft’s latest sustainability report is a good case study in the conundrum facing big tech companies that made a slew of climate pledges in recent years but could wind up polluting more as they turn their focus to AI.

Retail investor darlings GameStop (GME.N), opens new tab and AMC (AMC.N), opens new tab soared on Tuesday, as posts from "Roaring Kitty" Keith Gill raised chatter about the return of the central figure behind the 2021 meme stock frenzy.

Shares of both U.S. video game retailer GameStop and those of the world's largest theater chain AMC more than doubled during the trading session. GameStop shares rose to the highest since June 2021, closing up 60% at $48.75. AMC shares notched the biggest gain since January 2021, finishing up nearly 32% at $6.85.

Ubisoft gave Assassin’s Creed fans their first real look at the next flagship game in the long-running franchise with the debut trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Wednesday. Previously known as Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red, Shadows will send the franchise to feudal Japan for the first time this November, letting players live out their shinobi fantasies as the ninja Naoe.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also let players take on a second role, that of legendary Black samurai Yasuke. While other Assassin’s Creed games have featured dual protagonists, the two playable characters of Shadows appear to be more distinct than those of any previous game. The game’s female ninja character is shown wielding ninjato, wristblade, and kusarigama; her samurai counterpart is a heavily armored fella with a hefty katana.

New audio capabilities enable users to speak to ChatGPT and obtain real-time responses with no delay, as well as interrupt ChatGPT while it is speaking, both hallmarks of realistic conversations that AI voice assistants have found challenging, the OpenAI researchers showed at a livestream event.

May 7 (Reuters) - Microsoft's (MSFT.O), opens new tab Xbox is shutting down a number of gaming studios including Arkane Austin, making it the latest publisher to shut down studios amid signs of a gaming slowdown.

Studios such as "Hi-Fi Rush" maker Tango Gameworks, headquartered in Tokyo, and Canada-based Alpha Dog will also be closed and some employees will be laid off, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios said in a memo that was seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

Xbox declined to comment when asked about the number of employees impacted by the layoffs.

Growth in personal computing and console gaming is expected to remain below pre-pandemic levels as gamers record fewer hours of playtime owing to weaker release schedules, data from research firm Newzoo showed.
