Former President George W. Bush says Gen. Colin Powell was "a great man."

Powell, who served top roles in several administrations including national security adviser, chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, and secretary of state, died Monday at 84 from complications related to COVID-19, his family announced.

"He was a great public servant, starting with his time as a soldier during Vietnam. Many Presidents relied on General Powell’s counsel and experience. He was National Security Adviser under President Reagan, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under my father and President Clinton, and Secretary of State during my Administration," the former president said in a statement on Monday morning.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/10/22/member-of-congress-fears-jon-gruden-emails-are-the-tip-of-the-iceberg/

The U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee wants to learn more about the Washington Football Team workplace investigation that resulted in a leak of emails that triggered the abrupt resignation of Raiders coach Jon Gruden. Via John Keim of ESPN.com, one of the representatives who signed Thursday’s letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell fears that the Gruden emails represent the “tip of the iceberg.”

“The way they handle issues of race and gender and the way they treat their employees really influences the way society handles those very issues,” Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) told Keim. “We’re very much interested in learning more about exactly why the NFL did what they did and the way they did it.”

https://news.yahoo.com/tennessee-judge-created-used-policies-162839515.html

A court judge used policies to jail and detain kids without sufficient cause, a probe found.

A county settled an $11 million suit after lawyers alleged the policy departed from Tennessee law.

The policy has ended, and Donna Scott Davenport remains judge at Rutherford County Juvenile Court.

A Tennessee juvenile-court judge orchestrated a system to arrest and jail children, many of whom were Black and some who were as young as 8 and 9 years old, an investigation by ProPublica and Nashville Public Radio found.

The report, published on October 8, said juvenile-court Judge Donna Scott Davenport of Rutherford County created a "process" that involved arresting children, taking them into custody at a detention center, and then filing charges against them.

This differed from the norm in Tennessee, where police would typically serve court summonses to children and their parents instead of arresting children and taking them into custody, the investigation found.

Davenport declined an interview with ProPublica and did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Representatives from Rutherford County and from the state judicial system also did not respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Under Davenport's system, in 2016, 11 Black children were arrested and 10 were charged with "criminal responsibility for conduct of another" after they were said to have failed to stop a fight that was captured on video. But the attorney who represented some of the children said "criminal responsibility for conduct of another" is not a charge under Tennessee law.

Rather, it's a prosecutorial theory, the attorney Frank Ross Brazil told ABC News.

"So, that being applied as a charge in and of itself is unlawful," said Brazil, who did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on Sunday.

Davenport cultivated a public profile as a disciplinarian, discussing her work in interviews and on her monthly segment on WGNS radio. She even referred to herself as the "mother of the county," the joint investigation found.

Pamela Ononiwu said she couldn’t believe her eyes when she went to Fairview Elementary School in Fairfax Station, Virginia, to pick up her 5-year-old son for a dentist appointment on Oct. 3, 2018.

Before she could reach the vestibule near the principal’s office, where her son was waiting, she could hear him in distress.

“To my shock and horror, I found my son being put in a chokehold,” Ononiwu, 37, recalled. “This school resource officer was holding him at a 90 degree angle. My son kept trying to kick to get out of it, and the tighter the grip got.”

“I repeatedly told him to let my son go. I was scared because I was like, ‘Will I also be shot dead trying to save my son?’ But I said it’s worth it because I’m not gonna be here and let my son die or pass out in front of me,” the mother of three said. Ultimately, the school officer pushed the boy away, letting him go.

https://ktla.com/news/local-news/rapper-tyga-surrenders-to-lapd-after-woman-reports-domestic-violence-in-hollywood-hills/

Rapper Tyga turned himself into Los Angeles police Tuesday morning after a woman filed a domestic violence report against him the day before, officials said.

The rapper, whose real name is Micheal Ray Nguyen-Stevenson, was released on $50,000 bail Tuesday afternoon after surrendering around 9 a.m. at the police station in Hollywood, according to booking records and Officer Jeff Lee, an L.A. police spokesperson.

The alleged attack took place around 7 a.m. Monday in the Hollywood Hills, on the 9100 block of Oriole Way. However, Stevenson was there when officers arrived, and police met the victim at a separate location to take a report, Lee said.

When the rapper surrendered Tuesday, he was booked on suspicion of felony domestic violence, LAPD said.

Investigators have not described the victim’s claims. People identified the woman as Stevenson’s ex-girlfriend , who posted video of her bruised face to her Instagram story Monday and said she’d been emotionally and physically abused.

“I’m so embarrassed and ashamed it had to get to this but I have to stand up for myself,” she wrote in one caption.

Swanson started dating the rapper early this year, the magazine reported.

Inmate records showed he was scheduled to appear in court Feb. 8.
