Coffee in Space episodes

  • Dr. Scott Debb, Science behind the Science Fiction: Cyber Psychology

Every now and again, Coffee in Space takes a pause from author interviews to discuss the science behind our science fiction. For this episode, the show visits Norfolk State University in Virginia (USA) to talk cyber psychology with Dr. Scott Debb, associate professor for psychology.

On the show, we discussed what the program is and who it's for, some examples of how psychology is playing out around us today, and what it means for science fiction.

To learn more about the MS in cyber psychology, visit the Norfolk State University Website and write Dr. Debb directly with any questions.

  • Taylor Anderson Purgatory's Shore

Taylor Anderson is, to put it bluntly, a friend of the Coffee in Space podcast. Not only have I enjoyed every single interaction I've had with him, but he's also lent me his audience and his pull. He's taught me so very much about alternate history and speculative fiction. More than that, he's taught me how to fall in love with a character.

And so many people have fallen in love with Taylor's Characters. If you get nothing else from this interview, I hope you've understand a touch of what makes Taylor such a gifted writer. His worldbuilding, of course, is on point. It has to be because of the alternate world and history in which he writes. But it's more than just worldbuilding. It's characters we want to love. Taylor nails it.

Enjoy this episode and then the next one, which is ten more minutes with Taylor. I think you'll be happy you did. Get it HERE.

And when you're done listening, grab a copy of Purgatory's Shore!

You can learn more about Taylor at his website HERE. A great resource for learning more, once you're a bonified fan of Taylor's writing, is to visit this FB fan group.

  • Jadie Jang: Monkey Around

Claire Light, writing as Jadie Jang, has written about one of my favorite characters in Chinese folklore, the Monkey King. I think you'll enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed it. In our interview, Jadie and I discussed themes, the Monkey King in folklore, and recreating San Francisco as a character.

Her book is called Monkey Around, and it starts with a really cool fight scene. Enjoy!

We also discussed the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which you can learn more about HERE.

You can learn more about Jadie Jang at her website HERE and Twitter HERE.

  • Ronie Kendig: Toz Files, Droseran Saga

Disclaimer: This episode includes an interview with a Christian author, who writes science fiction and military/paramilitary thrillers. If you are concerned about discussions of faith, please consider skipping this episode and checking in again next week. Thank you!

I had the honor of interviewing popular author Ronie Kendig, author of over 25 novels and novellas. Her Tox Files series is well known and two books (Conspiracy of Silence, Crown of Souls) of the series won RT Reviewer's Choice Awards . Her new series, the Droseran Saga, takes her writing into new places, but Ronie's style and substance, as well as her character-driven process, remains ever present.

You can get her latest book here, Dawn of Vengeance.

  • Zen Cho: Black Water Sister

I first learned about Zen Cho when Amazon (always the faithful recommender of things to read! - lol) suggested I might like Black Water Sister. Well, Amazon isn't the king because they get things wrong. Indeed, I found the cover art for her novel to be extremely attractive and, once I'd read it, loved Black Water Sister. So much so, in fact, that I immediately asked Zen Cho, via her literary agent, to come on the show.

I'm so grateful we got to chat. I think you'll enjoy it a lot as well. Zen and I talked about writing about different ethnic backgrounds without being cliche, how worldbuilding works when writing in a contemporary setting, and how she mixed different religious backgrounds into her story, among other things.

  • C. Robert Cargill: Day Zero

    C. Robert Cargill wears many hats. He’s a movie critic, a screenwriter, a podcaster, and a novelist. Most people know him for his work on Marvel’s Dr. Strange, but he’s also a very gifted novelist with several novels to his credit. The two we talk about on this episode of Coffee in Space Podcast are Day Zero and Sea of Rust.

Cargill is also a military brat, which works so well for the show since it came out of the Military Fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy group on Facebook. If you’re in the military, or associated in any way with the military, please join the group.

In the interview, Cargill talks about the difference between writing his latest work, Day Zero, as a novel versus what it would look like as a movie script. He also discusses in great detail what it means to be a human. In fact, Cargill has a lot to say about the issue, which is what makes this episode such a gem.

His next release is the movie The Black Phone, which he adapted from a short story by Joe Hill.

To learn more about Cargill’s work, check out the WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE. You can also follow him on TWITTER .
