This week I share about the important but difficult balance of loving our children while also still loving ourselves. 

Coming out late in life and completely changing our family dynamics was hard on my kids - and rightly so. Over the years, I have worked really hard to make space for my kids to have their feelings and be able to voice their struggles. But carrying all of their pain and my own insecurities can get really heavy. 

If you came out late in life and have older children, this episode is for you. It’s important to know we aren’t alone in this crazy adventure. Though it is tempting at times to give up and go back to what makes everyone comfortable, it’s vital that we continue to honor ourselves. 

Loving and embracing our truest self is the very best thing we can do for our kids.

But first, come with me as I trudge out in 6 inches of snow, with wind chills below zero, to go visit the beautiful horse herd on our ranch. Watching the horses eat hay and nap in the sunshine, we are reminded that one simple way of finding peace is learning to live in the present moment.

This week started really shitty. Not the kind of Monday anyone wants to begin their week with. In less than 30 minutes, we lost 10 chickens.

Not just any ol’ chicken. Eight of my daughters’ prize bantams and two beloved older hens. It was a massacre. 

Today I tell the story. That horrific moment when we all realised something horrible had gone wrong in the chicken pen. 

But stay with me. After taking a day to grieve, process, and recalibrate, I was able to conduct some research into long-overdue questions. Questions about coyotes and how they seem to keep proliferating despite many efforts to control their populations. As I dug into the research, I was surprised to learn so much more. 

The more we can learn about things we do not understand, the better off the whole world will be. Instead of controlling, we can learn preventive practices that will help us coexist with nature in harmony and respect. 

Join me as I share my findings, and even more importantly, the lessons I learned from this whole painful endeavour.

• Muscles lose strength, flexibility, and endurance

• All this affects our balance, coordination, and stability as we age

This sounds like a depressing episode, but stay with me. Today, I discuss the science and truth of aging, but I also share the exciting things I am learning about how to better care for my body as I get older. 

Our bodies change whether we like it or not, but there is still so much in our control that we can take charge of to ensure that we continue to thrive even as our bodies change.

If we do what we’ve always done, we will NOT get what we have always gotten because our resources are limited, and as we age, they begin to run out. 

However, with intentional care, strategy, and a whole lot of willingness, we can find ways to supplement and help our bodies have the best shot at life!
