Bernie Sanders seems to be getting fed up with playing nice for party unity. Democrats have been led to believe that Sanders was just a left-wing incarnation of a wishlist while Hillary Clinton was the experienced one who knows how to get things done. Moreover, the spin is that there were just minor differences between the two and that Hillary Clinton as the electable one would have no problems getting the Sanders vote.

The problem is that Bernie Sanders started winning.  We will discuss whether this means an implosion of the Democratic Party as well.

"They're more fun than if you have a bunch of people around that you know what they're going to say.  We get to laugh about our differences once we understand what's going on." Among the first conversations the group had was a discussion on climate and energy. "One of the problems progressives have right now is that if they run into someone who doesn't believe in climate science, they roll their eyes."  As soon as you do that, "you've lost your conversation," Joan says. "Nobody listens to anybody."

This week I received an email blast from FAIR that really upset me. They have a tax calculator that evaluates each presidential candidates policies relative to family incomes. The calculator is decidedly biased. Many are circulating it through back channels. This has a material impact voters’ decision process. Unfortunately, the presumably Liberal site that has the calculator is misinforming in the same mode as Right Wing hacks.

In this extraordinary presidential election year of 2016, we keep hearing a lot of dark references to “populism” on both the left and the right.  But what does “populism” mean, and why does it have such a negative connotation?  Aren’t we a popular democracy?  And isn’t democracy good?

Woody Holton, a South Carolina history professor, thinks that democracy is, in fact, a good thing.  He’s even written a book about it:  Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution.  Woody’s story contrasts with the history you probably learned in high school, where George Washington, James Madison, and a few other rich guys did all the heavy lifting.  As it turns out, they had lots of help.
