  • Route 66 Memories and Milestones

The Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference is rooted in Route 66 history. On April 27, 1931 the U.S. Highway 66 Association held a similar convention in Elk City, Oklahoma. As with the Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference, attendees were not just focused on the business of Route 66.

Fast forward to 2014. The International Route 66 Festival held in Kingman, Arizona was another milestone event in Route 66 history. But this one had an international impact.

The two day Crossroads of the Past and Future Conference at that festival was shared live and then archived on the Mohave County YouTube channel. Speakers included the director of the Historic Electric Vehicle Foundation, Dries Bessels of the Dutch Route 66 Association, Shamrock Texas Economic Development Corporation director Larry Clonts, Jim Ross, Kaisa Barthuli, director for the National Park Service’s Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, Michael Wallis, and other key people involved with various aspects of Route 66 history, preservation, community development, and tourism.

Route 66 was once just a mere highway. Milestones in its evolution from highway to icon are more than history. They are exciting chapters in the American story that are shared on Coffee With Jim.

  • Route 66: The Main Street of America

Route 66 is more than just the Main Street of America. It is the American story made manifest.

On September 14, 2025 accalaimed documentary film producer John Paget was our guest on Coffee With Jim. We discussed his amazing career and a new project, development of a full length Route 66 documentary centennial film. Today on Coffee With Jim, we discuss this amazing project rooted in his first documentary films about Route 66 produced in the 1990s.

We will also be discussing his Route 66 centennial project, Route 66 The Main Street of America that is described as, "An immersive, heartfelt centennial portrait that emerges through the unforgettable stories of the everyday heroes and enduring towns we meet along the way."

Attesting to Paget's skills as a film maker, the debut of the film in hisotric theaters along Route 66 and the accompanying road show has been at sold out venues in Illinois and Missouri. And now as he continues westward along Route 66, he takes time to visit with Jim, talk about the film, and to talk about the magic that has transformed a highway into an icon.

  • Route 66 Blurs The Line

    Source:

    https://www.podbean.com/eau/pb-x94jq-1b5174b

Route 66 blurs the line between the past and the present, and even the future. The San José de la Laguna Mission at the Laguna Pueblo dates to 1699. The village is even older. A few hundred miles to the west in Kingman Arizona the Historic Electric Vehicle Foundation is establishing the world's first EV museum.

Connecting these tangible links to our past and our future is legendary Route 66, the most famous highway in the world. In the year of the Route 66 centennial, planning a Route 66 road trip, driving Route 66, and marketing Route 66 is nostalgia and romanticism wrapped in apps, interactive websites, podcasts, and social media networks.

This juxtaposition is made manifest in Jerry McClanahan's EZ 66 Guide For Travelers, a delightful guidebook that seems to have been lifted from the 1950s. It is also manifest in the multifaceted Route 66 Navigation app that has transformed the way people plan a trip as well as travel Route 66. And you will see a blending of past and present in interactive travel planning websites like Visit Kingman developed by Talisman Magic Marketing.

On today's episode of Coffee With Jim, author, historian, and humorist Jim Hinckley talks about this blending of the past and present that ensures Route 66 will never fade from popularity as long as the American story provides inspiration. We will be revisiting this subject on an upcoming program when our guest is acclaimed documentary film producer John Paget, creator of Route 66: The Main Street of America, the official chronicle of the Route 66 centennial.

Here at Jim Hinckley's America an example of how the line between past and present can be blurred is found in support from out listeners through Patreon. It is also on display with our sponsors that share our passion for road trips and the American story - Deana Nelson State Farm Insurance, Roadrunner Lodge Motel, RouteTrip USA, Two Lane America, Enchanted Trails Trading Post & RV Park, and Gilligan's Route 66 Tours.

  • Pioneers of The Auto Industry

    Source:

    https://www.podbean.com/eau/pb-v6w57-1b48025

Forgotten pioneers, the women of the auto industry, is a fascinating chapter in the American story. Did you know that the heater that keeps you warm on the winter morning commute in Detroit was the brainchild of Margaret A, Wilcox? Florence Lawrence was a Hollywood pioneer and one of the first superstars of the silver screen. And she was also an automotive pioneer credited with the first turn signal device and first brake warning device.

The more I delved into this story about the dawning of the auto age, and the visionary pioneers that helped put the world on wheels, the more fascinating it became. Are you familiar with the name Helen Dryden or Marie Luhring? Wait until you hear a bit of their story!

Sharing America's story, it's what we do!

  • An Epic Road Trip: The Long Way Home

Four friends, three American cars from the 1960s bought sight unseen under a shared budget cap, and a reveal in St. Louis on September 25. Every open hood asks the same question: what can four friends fix, and who stops to help?

Let's see if I can provide a summary of this morning's episode of Coffee With Jim. The magic of Route 66, the people that infuse it with infectious enthusiasm, and road trips. Morgan and Citreon automobiles. Southern California car culture. Laguna Pueblo and centuries of history. The El Rancho, 1913 Richardson Trading Company and the 1948 Earl's restaurant in Gallup, New Mexico. A word famous book store in Burbank. EV history and an EV museum. The influence of Top Gear, Historic preservation. Life lessons. Auto restoration as therapy. Jay Leno. Apprenticeship programs and scholarships.

Our delightful visit with Blake Brisbois ot the Long Way Home (www.thelongway.co) was more than a wide ranging conversation. It was a shining example of why a reviewer called the program a virtual diner where folks gather on Sunday morning to talk cars, road trips, and adventure.
