  • Cogitations e63: about diligence
Many folk seem like they want to start something or make their mark. They start well but do not maintain. As the fable of the tortoise and the hair teachers, slow and steady wins the race. We can be all flash and no substance. We will look good for a little while but fizzle out and be more shamed than if we did nothing. Is this how we treat our christianity, our relationships, our work? Maybe this episode gives us all something to think about. If you like what we do and would like to participate you can become a patron at www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e61: about why people miss the obvious
Have you ever wondered why some people miss the obvious?  Like when the Bible says we are not saved by faith only but someone says, "we are saved by faith only," what causes that? In this episode of Cogitations we discuss just that. It is because of the threefold wall of cognitive dissonance, selective perception and selective exposure. Also, this is a biblical phenomenon and the principle is expounded on by our Master, Jesus. If you like what we do and would like to support us feel free to become a patron at www.patreon.com/nearcurches

  • Cogitations e60: about self responsibility
There is no power in victimhood. Contrary to popular believe the value of victimhood is nothing. In fact, no one can change their lives for the better while claiming victimhood. In this episode we talk about how to take charge of our lives and be better. If you like what we do and want to help, www.podbean.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e59: about gentiles an the Law of Moses

  • Cogitations e58: about God taking me back
It is difficult for some to consider that God will take them back given the terrible things they have done while they were away from Him. This episode of Cogitations deals with that form a principle about God from the book of Hosea. God is not a man, He is God. Hopefully you find this as confronting as I found it. If you'd like to be a part of what we do consider becoming a patron: www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e57: about courting vs dating
There is a book from back in the 90's that really promoted the idea of courting over the modern model of dating. My question is, was the colonial era and its tradition of courtship any more virtuous than out modern version of dating. Now I am not talking about hook-up culture. I am talking about the process of picking a mate. Obviously this hook-up culture that has sprang up is sinful and wrong. It is definitely no way to pick a mate. However, what is asserted by the proponents of courtship over dating is that courtship during the colonial days was of such higher moral fabric and virtue that we should adopt it today. My contention is that we romanticize yesteryear and that courtship is no more virtuous than our modern model of dating when it comes to picking a mate. We should go back to the Bible. If you like what we do and you want to help, consider becoming a patron at www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e56: about sheep, goats, and Jesus
There is a parable about a king who separates the sheep from the goats. From this parable we can learn so much about how we as Christian are supposed to be and live in this world as we interact with people who are less fortunate. If the congregation where you are is shrinking it may be because there are too many goats in the flock. If you like what we do and want to help, consider becoming a patron at www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e55: about being offended
Today's greatest virtue is being offended. The more offended you are the more virtuous. We are rewarded for being offended yet never have to actually do anything about it. This is not the healthy way. There was a time when being offended meant doing something. It is not that we need to do more, we just need to be offended less. In this episode of Cogitations we talk about the post of being offended. If you like what we do you can become a patron at www.patreon.com/nearcurches

  • Cogitations e54: about adultery and divorce
So many times the terms adultery and fornication are used interchangeably. Is the only way a married person able to commit adultery by also committing fornication? In this podcast we answer that question. If you like what we do and want to be a part of it then become a patron at www.patreon.com/nearchurches
