How did the Soviets beat the Americans into space with the launch of Sputnik?   

Dr. Andrew Aldrin, Director of the Aldrin Space Institute and ISU Center for Space Entrepreneurship at Florida Tech, did his PhD in Soviet studies. In doing research and interviewing people involved, Dr. Aldrin developed a unique perspective on the the topic which he shares here with Cold Star Project host Jason Kanigan. Nicole Shumaker, Research Specialist at Texas A&M, is in a unique role focusing on identifying opportunities for and developing synthesis in lunar construction methods. What gaps are there in the field between research, institutions, business and government? That's the key question Nicole is continuously answering, bringing people together in lunar construction efforts who may otherwise have not known the other existed.

Resulting from her effort is acceleration of research and technology development in lunar construction. Nicole meets with host Jason Kanigan on the Cold Star Project to discuss her work and developments in lunar construction methods.

Dr. Gordon Roesler, past DARPA Program Manager and founder of Robots In Space, is on the Cold Star Project. With host Jason Kanigan of Cold Star Tech, Dr. Roesler discusses the coming capabilities and uses of robotic technologies in space.

Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics is my guest on the Cold Star Project, and our space topics are many. Main-belt asteroid 4589 McDowell was named after him in 1993, and he was a contributor to Sky and Telescope magazine from 1993 - 2010. Since 1989 he has authored and edited Jonathan's Space Report, which tracks all known space launches.

Michael Maloney, founder of the advocacy organization Satellite Design for Recovery, is on the Cold Star Project with host Jason Kanigan to talk about the need for including a critical but not-yet-required component to the design of all objects launched into Earth orbit.  

Satellites and other orbital objects should have mandated design requirements for rendezvous, capture and disposal. The cost of not doing so will be chaos in orbit. Mike is here to tell us about these consequences.
