Cold World w DVJ & Michelle

This episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle starts with laughs, music and Big Brother — but quickly turns into a much deeper conversation about race, culture and the world we live in.

We talk about something that many people may not think about until they're forced to experience it: the difference between knowing another culture and being able to completely avoid it.

The conversation explores how Black and Brown people often grow up learning how to navigate predominantly white schools, workplaces, businesses and institutions — while white people can sometimes move through life without having to learn much about Black or Brown culture at all.

We use television, movies, music and pop culture to illustrate the point.

Could one Black person sitting at a table of white people participate in a conversation about mainstream television and music? Probably. But what happens when the situation is reversed? Would one white person sitting with a group of Black people talking about Martin, Living Single, Moesha, The Cosby Show, Do the Right Thing or Black music be able to participate in the same way?

That leads us into a bigger conversation about mainstream culture, representation, education, employment, economic power and the systems Black and Brown people have historically had to navigate. We talk about everything from applying for jobs and getting loans to simply existing in spaces where you may not see many people who look like you.

But that's not all!

This is Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle — coming to you from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This episode goes everywhere — from American history and the Mexican-American relationship to race, politics, Trump, ICE, Big Brother, comedy, sports and the everyday conversations that make Cold World what it is.

We start by looking back at westward expansion, Texas, Mexico and the complicated history behind how the United States grew across the continent. The conversation challenges some of the traditional versions of American history we were taught and asks who was really affected by that expansion — and whose story was left out.

Then we get into race, racism, stereotypes and identity, including a powerful comedy clip that sparks a conversation about slavery, Black history and the idea that our history began with oppression rather than with the civilizations, cultures and people who existed before it.

Politics gets heated as DVJ & Michelle talk about Donald Trump, immigration, MAGA politics and Wisconsin politics, including discussion surrounding Tom Tiffany and his association with Trump.

And then things take a serious turn.

We discuss ICE detention and new “shock gloves” described in an Associated Press report, including how the technology is designed to deliver an electric shock through physical contact. The episode raises questions about immigration enforcement, the treatment of people in custody and how far authorities should be allowed to go when controlling detainees.

Of course, it wouldn't be Cold World without the lighter side, too. 😂

🚨 IMMIGRATION DETENTION ABUSE We discuss disturbing allegations of sexual assault and abuse involving women held at an ICE detention facility in El Paso, including accusations involving guards, alleged abuse in areas without camera coverage, and the fear detainees faced when speaking out.

🔥 RACE, RACISM & AMERICA We get into some uncomfortable conversations about race, stereotypes, racism, representation in Hollywood and the ways comedy has been used to expose racial hypocrisy. We also hear clips from legendary comedians including Richard Pryor and Paul Mooney.

🔫 A TEEN GIRL'S DEADLY SHOOTING We examine a disturbing story from Ohio involving a 15-year-old girl who was killed by a teenage boy. The episode includes discussion of the police response and the suspect's claim that the shooting happened accidentally while he was handling a firearm.

💔 A CHILD LOCKED IN A BEDROOM We also discuss the horrifying case of an autistic girl who police say was severely malnourished and dehydrated after allegedly being locked inside her bedroom without adequate food or water. Investigators reportedly found the door secured from the outside and the window prevented from opening.

And, of course, it wouldn't be Cold World without plenty of opinions, jokes, music, sports, pop culture and those completely unexpected conversations that somehow happen along the way. 😂

It’s another unapologetically REAL episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle — and this one covers a LOT of ground.

We kick things off with a conversation about racial stereotypes — and we don't hold back. Black, White, Latino, Asian and other stereotypes get put on the table as we talk about where these ideas come from, why stereotypes can be dangerous, and how race continues to shape the way people see one another.

Then we get into Milwaukee politics and the results of the governor’s primary, including David Crowley’s extremely close victory over Francesca Hall. DVJ talks about why he supported Crowley from the beginning, why he was prepared to support Francesca if she had won, and why Democrats need to stop tearing each other down once the primary is over. We also talk about voter turnout, formerly incarcerated voters getting their rights back, staying consistent, and why every vote matters as Wisconsin heads toward the next election.

And then things take a MUCH darker turn.

We listen to a parole hearing involving a man accused of multiple violations, including new criminal charges, substance-related violations and other parole conditions. DVJ breaks down what he's hearing as the proceeding unfolds — including the man's explanation of what happened.

The conversation then moves into racism on social media, including disturbing comments made about the death of a young man in a motorcycle accident — and the heartbreaking moment when his mother revealed that the person being mocked was her son.

And because this is Cold World, we don't stay serious the entire time. 😂

We break down a disturbing case involving five command-level West Palm Beach police officers who were fired following an internal investigation into alleged overlapping paid assignments and department hours. The investigation reportedly uncovered 155 timesheet overlaps and nearly $37,000 in overlapping assignments. We talk about accountability, loopholes, and whether the rules really apply equally to everyone.

Then we're back to Wisconsin politics, including the governor's race, the Democratic primary, David Crowley, Francesca Hong, political infighting, old social-media posts, and why criticizing a candidate is different from completely tearing down someone you're planning to support.
