  • 50: The Real Reason You Can't Stay Motivated — It's Not What You Think

Have you ever known exactly what you needed to do to feel better — and still couldn't make yourself do it?

In this episode, Charla gets real about one of the most universally human struggles: the gap between knowing and doing. Drawing on 30+ years in the fitness and wellness industry — and her own personal experience — she unpacks why we self-sabotage, what's actually happening in our bodies and brains, and how to finally stop fighting ourselves.

What You'll Hear in This Episode:

🧠 The Knowing-Doing Gap — Researchers have documented this phenomenon across every walk of life: smokers who know the risks, doctors who ignore sleep, athletes who overtrain. We are not irrational — we're human. Understanding this is the first step to dropping the shame.

⚡ Your Nervous System Is Running the Show — When your nervous system is dysregulated and stuck in fight-or-flight, your body will not prioritize the gym or a healthy meal. It will prioritize survival. That's not a character flaw — that's biology.

🍕 Why We Reach for Food, Phones & Netflix — Charla and her friend Terry unpack the cycle of emotional eating and nervous system flooding. We reach for fast regulators — sugar, scrolling, wine — not because we're weak, but because they work in the short term. Until we find better tools.

🛑 The Problem With "No Excuses" Culture — Shame and force can drive short-term results. But they almost always lead to crash, burnout, injury, and giving up. Your brain doesn't respond to force — it responds to safety, repetition, and reward.

💛 The Science of Self-Compassion — Research shows people who practice self-compassion after a setback are more likely to try again than those who use harsh self-criticism. Charla shares the story of a 7-year-old gymnast who belly-flopped, laughed, and then nailed it — because compassion creates safety, and safety is where growth happens.

    ✅ Charla's 4-Step Compassion Framework:

    1. Notice Without Judgment — Be the observer, not the critic. Get curious about your behavior, not condemning.

    2. Set a Timer — 15 minutes. That's it. Just start. The resistance lives at the door, not inside the workout.

    3. Stack the Win — Celebrate every small showing-up. Your brain builds neural pathways through reward.

    4. Talk to Yourself Like Someone You Love — You'd never shame a client or friend for missing the gym. Extend that same grace to yourself.

  • 48: The Power of Apologizing to Your Child | Parenting, Accountability & Repair

In this heartfelt solo episode, Charla Goodnight shares a raw parenting moment that led to one of the most powerful lessons about integrity, accountability, and repair.

After losing her temper and reacting instead of responding, Charla chose to return to her son with a genuine apology. His response — "It's okay. You're human. Thank you for the apology." — sparked a deeper conversation about authority, trust, and what children truly learn from us.

    This episode explores:

    • Why apologizing to your child builds trust and authority
    • How integrity is modeled inside the home
    • The myth that parents lose power when they say "I was wrong"
    • How to repair after yelling or reacting emotionally
    • The role of nervous system regulation in parenting
    • What children absorb from the way we handle mistakes
    • How to apologize in a way that truly repairs

Charla also reflects on insights from her recent conversation with Morgan Rich about integrity — when our values match our actions — and what happens when they don't.

This is a conversation about emotional maturity, conscious parenting, humility, and the courage to walk back into the room.

Because repair is where healing begins.

  • 47 - How Men Can Heal In a Culture of Distraction (Presence Is the Revolution)

Anytime we feel unrest, we escape—into devices, distraction, numbing, performance. In this episode of Collective Guidance, host Charla Goodnight sits down with Morgan Rich (founder of Beyond) for a grounded, honest conversation about modern masculinity, meaning, and the pathway back to integrity.

Morgan shares why so many men (and especially young men) feel detached, anxious, or depressed—and why vulnerability has been culturally mislabeled as weakness. Together, Charla and Morgan explore what healthy masculinity actually looks like in real life: taking responsibility, regulating the nervous system, building safe brotherhood, and choosing presence over performance.

They also discuss how culture shapes boys through teasing and emotional shutdown, how integrity destabilizes fear-based systems, and what simple practices help you return to center when life feels overwhelming.

    Key Topics Covered:

    • The "breakdown of meaning" and the betrayal of self through escape
    • Integrity as values matched with actions
    • Why vulnerability is strength (and why it's still hard for men)
    • How teasing culture trains emotional shutdown
    • Young men, depression, anxiety, and disconnection
    • Building sanctuary: safe community + accountability + belonging
    • A simple practice to return to center (hand to heart + breath)

  • 46 - How to Regulate Your Nervous System Using Your Moon Sign

Regulate Your Nervous System Through Your Moon Sign

Most people believe they're "bad" at emotional regulation.

But what if the issue isn't discipline — it's alignment?

In this episode of Collective Guidance, Charla Goodnight explores how your Moon sign directly influences your nervous system, emotional reactions, and regulation patterns.

    Your Moon represents:

    • Your subconscious emotional body
    • How you respond to stress
    • What makes you feel safe
    • How you process triggers

When you're dysregulated, you're not in your logical Sun sign — you're in your Moon.

Charla breaks down nervous system regulation tools by element:

🔥 Fire Moon (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) When dysregulated: anger, urgency, fight response Regulation tool: movement, intensity, breathwork, physical discharge

🌬 Air Moon (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) When dysregulated: anxiety, racing thoughts, overthinking Regulation tool: journaling, talking it out, cognitive reframing

🌊 Water Moon (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) When dysregulated: emotional flooding, shutdown, freeze Regulation tool: safety, softness, water, alone time

🌎 Earth Moon (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) When dysregulated: tension, over-functioning, rigidity Regulation tool: grounding, routine, organization, physical stability

This episode is an invitation into:

    • Self-compassion
    • Emotional awareness
    • Working with your wiring
    • Returning to safety

You don't need to heal your Moon. You need to understand it.
