Sin is so bad that the only way mankind has any hope of salvation is through the grace that comes by faith in Jesus Christ. Our only righteousness is His righteousness. Our only plea is Jesus. How terrible is it, then, if we desire this grace for ourselves, but do not wish it for others! Is there anyone so terrible that God’s grace cannot save him? Let us learn from the life of Jonah that while everyone is unworthy of grace, they are all capable of receiving it.

There are two levels of obedience. There is the outward obedience that conforms to some external pressure. This obedience looks right because it is visible. But real obedience is the kind of obedience that comes from the heart. This heart obedience is what God desires; that we would obey Him because we want to obey, not just because we feel like we must obey. Jonah obeyed God, but not because he wanted to. He did not have this type of heart obedience.

The psalmist asked the penetrating question: “Can I find a place where God is not already there?” He knew that he might attempt to run from God, but God would easily find him. Jonah thought he had outwitted God by having himself cast overboard, but God will not let someone die if he wants him to live. He is sovereign that way. Jonah discovered the truth that the fish is not a curse, but a blessing.
