Welcome to the latest episode of Movie Review Talk with Scott Mantz! On this episode, Scott, Clarke Wolfe, and Scott Menzel are discussing three new releases – The Happytime Murders, Searching and Operation Finale. The critics also give their thoughts on the Hereditary Blu-ray that comes out on digital and Blu-ray soon and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before streaming on Netflix.
The Happytime Murders is directed by Brian Henson, puppeteer and head of the Jim Henson Company. It stars Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale, and Elizabeth Banks and features the voice of Bill Barretta. The tagline for the film reads No Sesame. All Street. It’s a filthy comedy set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show.
Searching stars John Cho, Debra Messing, Joseph Lee, Michelle La, and Sara Sohn, and is directed by Aneesh Chaganty. The film has been getting some great early buzz at press screenings and festivals. The film focuses on Cho’s David Kim whose 16-year-old daughter goes missing. A local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.
Operation Finale comes from director Chris Weitz whose credits include About a Boy and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. It is based on a true story adapted by screenwriter Matthew Orton. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Peter Malkin and Ben Kingsley as Adolf Eichmann. This thrilling true story follows the 1960 covert mission of legendary Mossad agent Peter Malkin as he infiltrates Argentina and captures Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi officer who masterminded the transportation logistics that brought millions of innocent Jews to their deaths in concentration camps. The film also stars Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller, Greg Hill, Torben Liebrecht, Mike Hernandez, Greta Scacchi, and Pêpê Rapazote.
