Our own Jeff Sneider reports that James Franco is in negotiations to direct an adaptation of the book: Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN for Focus Features, with Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher C. Rogers tapped to rewrite the script.

In a report from Omega Underground, later confirmed by THR, Silver and Black and Cloak and Dagger director Gina Prince-Bythewood has signed on to direct The Old Guard, Skydance’s adaptation of the comic from author Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez. Old Guard tells of a small group of soldiers, led by a woman named Andy, who are immortal and have been working as mercenaries through the ages. The group gets a jolt when they discover the existence of a new immortal, a black woman serving in the Marines, at the same time as a nefarious organization captures their undying actions on camera. The movie hopes to shoot this fall in time for a release in 2019.

Deadline reports that Ryan Reynolds is attached to produce and potentially play a role in Stoned Alone; a movie that is inspired by Fox’s all time grossing comedy Home Alone.

Variety reports that Dan Stevens is teaming up with Harrison Ford in 20th Century Fox’s Call of the Wild. The trade says that they are unclear what role Stevens will play, but it is said to be a significant one. Ford is playing John Thornton, a prospector searching for gold in the unforgiving Yukon. The film is a big-budget adaptation of Jack London’s classic novel of the same name.

THR reports that Oscar winner Gary Oldman is reteaming with his Darkest Hour director Joe Wright and joining Amy Adams in The Woman in the Window. The movie will be for Fox 2000, a drama, and is an adaptation of the book of the same name by A.J. Finn.

Deadline reports that Jason Ropell has stepped down from Amazon Studios as vice president World Wide head of motion pictures. The exit is amicable, and Ropell took the action basically after Amazon chief Jennifer Salke told him that she wanted to take the movie division in a different direction, one with bigger budgets and commercial risks - I.E. more mainstream movies. Could this be a sign of the shift happening - where streaming services will now take on major Hollywood studios.

The 2018 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6 to 16th and the line-up has been announced. The highlights including Felix van Groeningen’s Beautiful Boy, Damien Chazelle’s First Man, George Tillman Jr.’s The Hate U Give, Claire Denis’ High Life, Nicole Holofcener’s The Land of Steady Habits, Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, Steve Mcqueen’s Widows, Jason Reitman’s The Front Runner, Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, David Lowery’s The Old Man & The Gun, Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, Jacques Audiard’s The Sisters Brothers, and Yann Demange’s White Boy Rick.

THR reports that Emma Thompson is joining the production of the new Men in Black movie, reprising her role as Agent O, the chief of the Men in Black organization, in which she appeared in Men in Black 3.

The Wall Street Journal reports that you might be able to see the hit play sooner, rather than later - and not by purchasing a very expensive tickets. A recorded version of the hit musical with the original Broadway cast is currently being fought over in Hollywood, to screen, possibly, in theatres - and it will star original lead Lin-Manuel Miranda.

A24 has released the first trailer for Mid90s. Written and directed by Jonah Hill, the film follows 13-year-old Stevie over the course of the summer as he makes friends with a group of skaters; and features Oscar-nominee Lucas Hedges in a supporting role.

Days after Disney ousted Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn for recently resurfaced controversial tweets, hundreds of thousands of fans have called on the studio behind the comic-book franchise to rehire the filmmaker with a change.org petition created that has garnered over 168,000 signatures.

The Joker movie is moving fast and two new castings dropped yesterday on the heels of last week’s casting notice that saw Zazie Beets joining the Joker film. Now THR reports that Robert DeNiro is in talks to join the film as a talk show host who proves instrumental to the Joker’s origin. Over at the Wrap, they report that Frances Conroy is in talks to play the Joker’s mother, Penny. The movie is set for release on Oct 4th, 2019.

Deadline reports that David Leitch is in early talks to direct Enter the Dragon, the remake of the 1973 martial arts classic that starred Bruce Lee. The movie was about a Shaolin martial artist who is pressed to enter a karate tournament on the island owned by the secretive Han, who is suspected of using the gathering as a way to smuggle drugs around the world. The protagonist has his own motivation: revenge. He learns that his sister fought for her life and ultimately killed herself on Han’s island, rather than succumb to rape by a group of Han’s thugs.

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for Alita: Battle Angel. Based on the graphic novel series Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro, the story takes place in the 26th century and revolves around an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor, rebuilt, and then set on a path of hunting down vicious criminals. Alita: Battle Angel opens in theaters on December 21st.

WB has officially dated the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie for Oct. 4, 2019, and with that news comes also an official title: Joker. Directed by Todd Phillips. Joker will open opposite Paramount's Gemini Man and Fox's The Woman in the Window, followed a week later by Dwayne Johnson and Disney's Jungle Cruise and fellow Warners title, The Goldfinch. And on Nov. 1, DC and Warners unfurl Wonder Woman 2.

According to EW, they confirm that next year’s Shazam! movie takes place in the same universe as the other DC films. The question now is are there tentative plans to do more with the Shazam character in the future, like perhaps making him a part of a Justice League sequel.

The first real look at Godzilla: King of the Monsters will most likely happen this Saturday at the Warner Bros. panel, but that doesn’t mean they can’t start teasing it now! The first clip has arrived showing Millie Bobby Brown trying to contact Monarch, the monster-investigating unit introduced in Godzilla and mentioned again in last year’s Kong: Skull Island.

THR reports that Jason Blum and James Wan are partnering for a techno horror thriller titled M3GAN. Gerard Johnstone, who directed the Australian horror movie Housebound, is on board to helm the project, which has a script by Akela Cooper, a writer-supervising producer who has worked on Luke Cage and American Horror Story.

The first trailer for the mysterious Overlord movie from JJ Abrams Bad Robot has finally landed online. The movie, also from Paramount Pictures, follows a group of U.S. paratroopers who stumble across a Nazi experimentation of supernatural forces meant to fight the Allies. The film is directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun), from a screenplay by Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant). It is set to debut October 26th.

After a report from The Wrap revealed the line-up for the proposed Birds of Prey movie - film reporter Umberto Gonzales revealed there will also be a “Batman” villain in the movie but didn’t reveal which one. Soon after, Umberto tweeted that it could possibly be The Penguin - which was later confirmed by Variety film reported Justin Kroll.

Netflix announced the movies and series they’ll produce from comics creator Mark Millar’s Millarworld empire: Queen Emporia Movie - a Huck Movie - and a Sharkey the Bounty Hunter Movie have all been announced.

The first trailer has been released for Assassination Nation, the bloody, bonkers hacker tale written and directed by Sam Levinson. Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra star as the core four at the center of a town that absolutely loses its marbles after a hacker releases the private info of everyone in the community. The movie hits theatres on September 21st.

Focus Features has released the first trailer for writer/director Joel Edgerton’s upcoming drama Boy Erased. The film is based on Garrard Conley’s memoir of the same name which chronicles his experience as a gay teenager who is sent to a conversion therapy program when he’s outed to his religious parents. Boy Erased opens in theaters on September 28th.

The first trailer for the new horror movie Hell Fest has been released. The film takes place in an amusement park where a masked psychopath is on the loose. Murderous times are had by him, and deaths are had by the main characters. CBS Films and Lionsgate will unleash Hell Fest in theaters on September 28th.

When last reported we learned that director Denis Villeneuve would head up a new adaptation of Dune; after being courted for James Bond 25. He was more interested in adapting Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel. Now it looks like he’s landed Oscar-nominee Timothee Chalamet to play the lead role of young nobleman Paul Atreides - this according to Deadline.

According to Variety, Harrison Ford is in negotiations to star in Call of the Wild. If a deal is reached Ford will play John Thornton, a prospector braving the Yukon on the hunt for gold, accompanied by his team of dogs. The big-budget film is being adapted by 20th Century Fox from the classic 1903 Jack London novel about the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s.

Production has officially begun on Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die. Focus Features announced the zombie comedy and will be the writer/director’s third collaboration with Focus, with previous projects including Broken Flowers and The Limits of Control. The cast is led by past Jarmusch collaborators, including Academy Award nominee Bill Murray (Broken Flowers), Adam Driver (Paterson), Academy-Award nominee Chloë Sevigny (Broken Flowers), Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive), Steve Buscemi (Mystery Train), as well as Selena Gomez (Monte Carlo) in her first Jarmusch feature.

Variety reports that Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown are in talks to join Disney’s Frozen 2. Should the deals make, they’ll join returning cast members Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, and Josh Gad, who are all set to return as Elsa, Anna, and Olaf, respectively. Frozen 2 opens November 27, 2019.

Nathan Fillion made his wise-cracking, peril-escaping debut as Nate Drake, the star of the Uncharted video game series by making a completely unofficial and unaffiliated Uncharted 15-minute fan-film directed by Allan Ungar and written by Ungar and Jesse Wheeler.

Skyscraper was no match for the third entry in the Hotel Transylvania series. Hotel Transylvania 3 took in $44 million on its opening weekend, the second-best opening in the series. The animated feature also took $46.4 million from overseas for a global start of over $100 million. Ant-Man and the Wasp earned $28.9 million for second and Skyscraper faltered badly taking in $25.5 million.

According to Out.com, Scarlett Johansson has dropped out of Rub & Tug, the movie that would have seen her play a transgender man. She said in part in a statement:

"In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project. Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive," the actress continued. "I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues."

According to THR, Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow. The move ends the search that lasted over half a year as the studio met with over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point; with the studio looking at male helmers as well.

THR reports that after starts and stops, Sony Pictures has finally reunited the cast of 2009’s 'Zombieland for a Part 2 - to be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the original. Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin are all in with original writers ( and Deadpool writers) Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese also returning.

Hot off the heels of her celebrated role in Black Panther, Danai Gurira entering early talks to star in the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong, and circling a potential role in the Star Trek sequel, this according to Deadline.
