Disney announced yesterday that Jennifer Lee will take on the position of Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios while Pete Docter will be Chief Creative Officer of Pixar Animation Studios. Both will report to studio chairman Alan Horn. This comes on the heels of the report that said John Lasseter would leave by end of year, acting as a “consultant” in the meantime.

Following the horrible critical reception of the new movie Gotti - and an even more dismal box office performance - the marketing behind the movie released a new ad getting to the alleged heart of the problem: the critics. The ad attacks the critics that gave Gotti a 0% (on RT), calling them trolls behind keyboards, while pointing to the rave “user” reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. But the “user ratings” seem to not match up.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Tau; a new sci-fi thriller starring Oscar winner Gary Oldman (his voice) as the AI house that terrorizes its inhabitants in a horrifying game of cat and mouse. Maika Monroe (It Follows) stars as a young woman living in a futuristic city who gets kidnapped and injected by a mysterious stranger. She wakes up strapped to a chair in a strange house run by the artificial intelligence Tau, a program invented by Ed Skrein‘s psychotic inventor. He gives her a choice: do as the house says, or die.

Here’s your regularly scheduled reminder that Warner Bros. megashark movie The Meg arrives this summer and to celebrate - the studio released the new poster. Which has never been more on the nose.

A brand new TV spot for Peyton Reed‘s Ant-Man and the Wasp has landed online, teasing the lack of connection Ant-Man had for the previous Infinity War. With tickets also going on sale at the same time over at Fandango. With Perri Nemiroff doing an extensive set visit in which the producers only said the timeline seems to take place after Civil War. With that said, will the lack of Infinity War connections affect the box office for Ant-Man and the Wasp?

Deadline reports that Oscar-winning Skyfall and American Beauty filmmaker Sam Mendes will direct and co-write the World War I film 1917 for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, with Universal Pictures distributing. The logline for 1917 is being kept under wraps, but Spielberg describes the project as “hugely daring” and “ambitious.”

Deadline reports that the biopic about Sammy Davis, Jr. has been set up at Paramount Pictures with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, where he has his overall deal. The project is on the fast track and will soon look to hire a writer and a director to make the feature film about the dancer-singer-actor-musician to becoming a reality.

THR reports that Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole will helm All Day and a Night, a drama for Netflix. Cole wrote the script for the project and is described as set in three parallel narratives that follows a young criminal after his arrival in prison as he looks back on the days preceding his arrest and the circumstances of his childhood to find clues to his way forward in life and his survival. Deadline also dropped more news about Netflix, revealing that Will Ferrell has signed on to star in Eurovision, a movie based on the wildly popular and long running international TV music competition The Eurovision Song Contest.

Variety reports that Dr. Dre is making a movie about Marvin Gaye. The rapper is in the early stages of getting the project off the ground; securing the rights to use Gaye’s music. Multiple attempts were made to give Gaye the biopic treatment. The singer behind hits “What’s Going On,” “Sexual Healing,” and “Let’s Get It On” was one of Motown’s most successful artists before he was fatally shot in 1984 at age 44 by his father following a family dispute in their Los Angeles home.

Disney and Pixar’s long-awaited Incredibles 2 soared past expectations to a record-shattering $180 million at the weekend box office. It easily makes the superhero sequel the best animated debut all time, beating Finding Dory’s $135 launch in 2016. Incredibles 2 didn’t just break animation records, the film also secured the eighth-best domestic opening for any film, not adjusted for inflation, and landed the title of best debut for a PG-rated film, surpassing Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, which opened to $174.6 million in 2017.

Warner Bros. began their Aquaman marketing push last week, kicking off with a number of first look images in EW including a cover story. Jason Momoa returns in the title role alongside King Orm (Patrick Wilson), Aquaman’s mentor Vulko (Willem Dafoe), Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), Meera (Amber Heard), and Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Aquaman is set to perk up our winter doldrums on December 21st 2018.

Marvel Studios announced the new composer for Captain Marvel and it’s composer Pinar Toprak. She is the first woman to write and score a movie for Marvel. Toprak is a bit of a fresh talent, working on a number of smaller scale thrillers and horror movies before breaking out in a big way last year as the composer for Syfy’s Superman prequel series Krypton and the immensely popular video game Fortnite.

Bloomberg reports that, as part of Apple’s push into original programming, the company is making plans for an original animated feature film produced through Cartoon Saloon. Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon has been around for nearly 20 years, though their most famous feature titles have come in the last decade. The studio counts Oscar-nominated films The Secret of Kells (2009), Song of the Sea (2014), and The Breadwinner (2017) as their only three major feature releases, but that might be about to change thanks to a possible deal with Apple, Inc.

According to our very own Jeff Sneider, up-and-coming filmmaker Janicza Bravo has signed on to direct Zola for A24. The project is based on David Kushner’s Rolling Stone article “Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted.

Welcome to the latest episode of Movie Review Talk with Scott Mantz! On this episode, Scott, Kevin McCarthy and Nikki Novak are discussing three new releases – Tag, Incredibles 2, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Tag is directed by Jeff Tomsic stars Ed Helms. For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade—risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry: “You’re It!“. This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready. Based on a true story, the New Line Cinema comedy “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing. Rounding out the cast is Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Rashida Jones, Isla Fisher, Leslie Bibb, Hannibal Buress, with Jon Hamm and Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner.

Incredibles 2 welcomes back Brad Bird as its director and features the voices of Craig T. Nelson as Bob aka Mr. Incredible and Holly Hunter as Helen aka Elastigirl. Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2" – but this time Helen is in the spotlight, leaving Bob a home with Violet and Dash to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. The film also features the voices of Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor is a documentary about Fred Rogers, the host of the Mr. Rogers Neighborhood program that ran for decades on public television. Academy Award winning filmmaker Morgan Neville takes an intimate look at America’s favorite neighbor: Mister Fred Rogers. A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.

According to a wide-ranging article at THR, there are major shakeups at Warner Bros. regarding the DC film universe, but this time it feels like things are actually going to stick. The new person in charge is Walter Hamada, who successfully carved out a number of hits at sister studio New Line, including The Conjuring universe, now has a specific plan for the DC Universe.

While Disney made a $52.4 billion offer to acquire the bulk of 21st Century Fox’s TV and studio assets—including the film studio 20th Century Fox and with that the Marvel properties the studio holds—word surfaced weeks ago that Comcast might try to get in on the action instead. Indeed, Comcast confirmed Wednesday it’s making a $65 billion all-cash bid to acquire 21st Century Fox instead of Disney, and thus an official bidding war is now underway.

Deadline reports that Participant Media has acquired feature rights to S-Town, the This American Life podcast - with Spotlight‘s Tom McCarthy in negotiations to direct the film and playwright Samuel Hunter is in talks to write the script. The podcast told the story of a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks podcaster Brian Reed to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, and the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man’s life.

Jeff Sneider of Collider reports that James Corden is signing on to join Melissa McCarthy in New Line’s action-comedy Superintelligence. Ben Falcone, McCarthy’s husband and longtime collaborator, is directing from a script by Steve Mallory. McCarthy and Falcone will also produce through their company On the Day. Production will start this summer, and Warner Bros. will release the film next year on Christmas Day.

Variety reports that Ewan McGregor will star as Danny Torrance in Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the Stephen King novel Dr. Sleep, the sequel to horror classic. Sources say King has given his blessing to McGregor’s casting. Mike Flanagan, who helmed the Netflix adaptation of the King novella Gerald’s Game will direct, with the movie slated for release in January of 2020.

Yesterday, AT&T’s proposed merger with Time Warner was allowed and can now proceed. It does not pose antitrust problems, a federal judge ruled. The decision is a defeat for the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, which challenged the merger - arguing that it would ultimately cost consumers. The DOJ’s argument was that AT&T-Time Warner would use its increased leverage to extract “higher carriage fees for channels like TBS, TNT and CNN.”

Avengers: Infinity War has officially crossed the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office today, marking a genuinely rare achievement. It’s only the fourth film in history to break it, the first for a Marvel title and the third to do so in its initial run (Titanic hit $2 billion on re-release). It’s also Disney’s second film to crack $2 billion after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which completed its run with $2,068,223,624 worldwide.

While the first trailer for the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody went over well, it was impossible not to notice that the trailer made no mention of the film’s director. After Bryan Singer left the production and Eddie the Eagle filmmaker Dexter Fletcher was brought in, the question became: who would get credit. As revealed in the new issue of Empire Magazine, it’s Bryan Singer.

THR reports that John Cena has joined Jackie Chan to star in a new action thriller from Need for Speed director Scott Waugh. Cena replaces Sylvester Stallone, who was previously attached to star alongside Chan, in a movie that centers on a Chinese private security contractor (Chan) who is called in to extract the oil workers when a China-run oil refinery in the Middle East is attacked. When he learns that the attackers’ real plan is to steal a fortune in oil, he teams up with an American — a former Marine played by John Cena — to stop them.
