Comics, Cartoons, and Craft beers

Today we’re going DEEP into the retro vault to talk about the original bash brothers of animation: Tom and Jerry. They single (double) handedly (paw’edly) kicked William Hanna and Joseph Barbera into legendary status. Do cats really hunt mice or was nature warped by the very EXISTENCE of these two? Come down that rabbit hole with us and learn about all the iterations and influences T&J had over the past 80 years. Guest Spot recommending these legends is Sean McDonough. Linktree in the bio!

If you can’t hear the mouth-sounds-only theme song at the SIGHT of Tommy Pickles, did you even childhood? We finish off the Nicktoons big 3 with the wholesome story about babies and their neglectful parents: Rugrats! These babies imagined the wildest adventures, then truly put their soft spots at risk to explore this huge world they’ve been thrust into. Superpower babies, bullies, Daycare jailbreaks, and cookie heists… and of course the widely known fact that SPIKE WAS THE BEST DOG EVER. Just so much good in this show. We give it a solid 10 out of 10 calls to child services. Slight warning for #mamatrauma. Special Guest spot: Sandy Froonjian!

So apparently the fastest way to get over your ex is to become Gotham’s number 1 villain and throw it into a dystopian paradise. Who knew? This is HARLEY QUINN from HBOMAX. All it takes is one bad night to have you tossing out the full clown get up for the Margot Robbie baseball bat toting badass DRIP. Harley does so in an attempt to make it as a solo villain and the shenanigans are only out matched by the jokes-per-second this show provides. It has definitely snuck into the adult cartoon world as a big surprsing way and something you can recommend to vets and non-comic book nerds alike. We give it 10 out of 10 giant hammers. Guest Spot this ep is The Godfather of Jersey Shore Comedy Scene, Mr. Angelo Gingerelli.

Netflix’s “Super Crooks” absolutely slaps (it’s just lingo, not another boring Will Smith joke, relax). It is your quintessential heist movie meets Invincible/The Boys. Imagine the Justice League and the Legion of Doom are your union agencies and you are trying to put together a team for one quick score without dues. IMAGINE BRAD PITT BUT WITH PSYCHIC POWERS INSTEAD OF SNACKS?! The art is stunning, the action is fluid and brutal, and the lore is hilariously dark. We break down this whole show from plot to VO’s to genre defamation… and hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do. Brosode this time… Just us, Ming Chen, and our sweet sweet home that is A Shared Universe. #comicscartooonsandcraftbeer #comicscartooonsandcraftbeerthepodcast #comics #cartoons #craftbeer #craft #beer #podcast #pod #cccbthep #cccb #ashareduniverse #netflix #supercrooks #anime #heist #superpowers #thieves #johnnybolt #Staytooned

Remember when Michael Jordan played baseball and was so god awful at it, they smashed it into a movie with the Looney Tunes (spelled corrected you Mandela Effected dummies)? A still functioning website from 96 remembers. Space Jam was a solid amalgamation of mid 90s bar trivia questions and cartoon nostalgia with more aging NBA stars than Kobe’s funeral. Oh and Bill Murray every body *hard clap for respect*. We’d definitely give it a good 3 and a half ACME brand Anvils. Listen in!

End of 2021/start of 2022 haven’t been kind to comedy legends. Louie Anderson was one of the biggest… NOT A FAT JOKE WE SWEAR (you know he'd he’d appreciate it anyway). He left behind a lot of legendary roles and the one you definitely forgot about was his young self going through all the fun of a kid in the 60s with a sweeter than sweet mom and a cranky, pstd’d out dad. Life with Louie was a short lived, wildly underrated fox kids show that was definitely not as kid friendly as we thought but absolutely had the Louie comedic stylings all over it. Listen and watch along with us as we beer about this one and reminisce the great comic we lost.

Who knew a kids cartoon could have you questioning how much ass you can handle. David Feiss made a solid attempt at answering such a thing when he created Cow and Chicken… a show so insane it’s pilot got an Emmy Nom AND banned. Jersey native Charlie Adler voiced almost everything in this show and so clearly had a blast doing it. Eating ass for breakfast lunch and dinner with a side of taters, walking on your cheeks to get from place to place, having the literal devil getting beat up by a Spanish speaking bovine in a bath towel… this show was bonkers in all the right ways. Guest spot this round is Pedro Garcia of North Jersey comedy scene and Diablo Radio.

Season 2 kicks off for the CCCB boys with the reason this whole podcast started… literally. A deep love for the legend that is Samurai Jack might have been the first conversation about cartoons we had… which immediately led to the Step Brother’s style “What to do karate in the garage?” version of “Let’s start a podcast.”

This show means the world to animation nuts like us. It blew our teenage minds to find out that this mostly kiddy platform could pull off artistry; that with small amounts dialogue, you could tell such a massive story. This did both perfectly AND was pumped full of action and comedy. The Phil LaMarr and Genndy Tartakovsky combination is perfect and Mako crushes the best villain role of all time like it’s the role he was genetically created to play.

Included in this ep as a New Years bonus, we have a list of new cartoons you should either 100000% check out or avoid like the anti-mask deep-coughing guy at Shop Rite. Pay attention, we know our shit.

Happy New Beers everyone, thanks for all the support, big thanks to this rounds guest spot Big Kahuna Christian Cordes, and more big thanks to A Shared Universe for always giving us a home! Drink a solid brew for us and for Season 2!

Happy Holidays Toonheads! We’ve had an amazing time recording our eps and giving our opinions on some legendary and not-so-legendary cartoons. So to round out the year, we took our 50th episode and made it not just a holiday special, but a clear and concise (HA YA REAL CONCISE WITH AN HOUR AND A HALF EPISODE) tier list of alllllllllll the big name Christmas/Holiday movies. Categorized by Rankin and Bass, Classics, and “Newbies trying to break into the status of must-watch-ever-holiday-season”, we hold no quarter for some and pay homage to the greats with great beers and as always A Shared Universe holding it down. Our Guest spot is The Big Kahuna himself jumping out from behind the scenes to use his extensive knowledge on the craft as well as promote his new Christmas album “In the Key of Christmas”. Link for that will be in our Linktree in the next coming days.

Thanks for all the support this year and big shout out to our guest spots coming on and talking with us about the shows they love as much as we do.

MERRY CHRISTMAS YA FILTHY ANIMALS… AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

GRAB YOUR RICKENBACKERS THIS ONES A TRIP AND A HALF. Today’s episode we go face first in to the 6-episode anime epic, FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly in case you’re uncultured). Adult Swim snatched this up for their Toonami Midnight run a million years ago and I guarantee it went over most of our heads. However, as we aged, we learned the deeper philosophies, caught more references, and on top of it all, our ADHD had a much fiercer grip on our lives, so we probably understood way too much or way too little. Either way, we’re 10000000% on board with the soundtrack so kick back with The Pillows and just coast through this show. Guest spot perfection this round is Jordan Manglona of local NJ comedy and music fame.
