  • Nick Lowery | Kick Pressure to the Curb

How well do you execute under pressure?

Are you at your best, or do you crack?

On today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Kansas City Chiefs all-time leading scorer and member of the Chiefs Hall of Fame, Nick Lowery.

If there's anyone who knows a thing or two about coming up clutch in the biggest of moments, it's Nick Lowery.

In this latest episode, Nick and I talk about…

    • Nick's mentality after missing two field goals for the Chargers in his Rookie Year and getting cut
    • Nick's advice for overcoming the fear of failure and the nervous butterflies
    • Why EVERYONE should get out and serve

    …and so much more.

If you want to learn how to overcome pressure like a Hall of Famer, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 08:27] Introducing Nick to the show

    • Nick's most embarrassing moment
    • Nick's background, story, and professional journey

[08:28 - 15:58] Nick's mentality after missing two field goals for the Chargers his Rookie Year and getting cut

    • Nick's mentorship with Dick Johnson taught him the importance of gratitude and managing your mind
    • After missing two field goals for the Chargers his Rookie Year and getting cut, Nick's mentality was, "It's not the end, you're just getting used to this."
    • If you're truly committed, persistence is necessary so you can learn what it takes to succeed
    • In 1978, he walked into the New England Patriots office and told them they needed him as their kicker - went on to make 17/17 field goals for them and he was signed 30 minutes later.
    • "It's not how many times you get knocked down. It's how many times you get back up." - Dick Johnson
    • You never know what else you have to learn or what else you can learn unless you keep putting yourself out there

[15:59 - 26:25] Nick's advice for overcoming the fear of failure and nervous butterflies

    • Most of the problem: when we say "I don't want to be nervous." Nick says to flip it and say, "I want to be nervous."
    • Practice putting healthy pressure on yourself, creating situational awareness, and determine how you want to feel in those intense moments
    • If you're too self-conscious, you're slow down the parts of your body that need to be sped up
    • The advice Nick got from Tony Robbins: Find out who you're playing for - this will take you out of the self-conscious place

[26:26 - 30:59] The key to handling the spotlight with class and grace

    • When you screw up, you learn
    • Stop making excuses
    • It doesn't matter how good you are, you're going to receive criticism, unfair criticism, and, sometimes, unfair or untruthful criticism.
    • Key reminder when you're receiving criticism: That's a good sign of leadership.

[31:00 - 44:18] Why EVERYONE should get out and serve

    • Service and gratitude go hand-in-hand
    • Serving others helps you see individuals as a fellow human being
    • It's really about giving God's gifts that are unique to each of us - we have to find them, identify them, and work our whole lives to perfect them
    • In return, we get grace and groundedness and others get miracles

    [44:19 - 48:35] Wrapping Up

    • Nick's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Nick

    KEY QUOTES

  • Bob Wheatley | How Our Stories Reveal the Thing We Want Most

How good of a storyteller are you?

I'm not talking about the stories you tell others. I'm talking about the stories you're telling yourself. We tell ourselves a lot of stories throughout the day, but how many of them are life-giving?

On today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with former pro baseball player turned bestselling author, Bob Wheatley. We got into the power of story and how it impacts your life.

In this latest episode, Bob and I talk about…

    • What Bob wished he would've done differently as a professional athlete
    • The narrative we're telling ourselves over and over and what it reveals to us
    • What is catharsis, why you should want it, and how to get it

    …and so much more.

If you want more insight into what your stories are revealing about you, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 19:01] Introducing Bob to the show

    • Bob's most embarrassing moment
    • Bob's background, story, and professional journey
    • Bob's clutch moment as a college and pro baseball player

[19:02 - 28:19] What Bob wished he would've done differently as a professional athlete

    • He would've lived better as a Christian
    • You can be a Hall of Famer, but that does nothing to solve your sin problem
    • God is the author of your story
    • Pain may be the best thing for you, especially spiritual pain (God knows what's best for you)

[28:20 - 41:52] The narrative we're telling ourselves over and over and what it reveals to us

    • Most stories have six main parts: hero, villain, love interest, paradise, paradise lost, paradise restored
    • These elements of a story are written on every human heart - God created us to long for that storyline. It's an expression of the deepest longing of our heart (which is to know God)
    • We are supporting characters in God's story
    • The stories we tell ourselves reveal what we really want
    • If you don't like the story you're telling yourself: tap into the whispers you're hearing from yourself. Then, make that thought obedience to Jesus Christ and identify what that thought is telling you about your longing for God

[41:53 - 56:42] What is catharsis, why you should want it, and how to get it

    • Catharsis: the "Ahhhh" feeling after a great movie and the ending you were hoping for
    • Three steps to catharsis:
      1. Desire
      2. Delay (waiting for the desire you want)
      3. Delivery (when the desire actually comes)
    • The reason we feel tension is we want the cathartic moments to last forever
    • When you're in the delay phase of catharsis and it's starting to get frustrating:
      • Realize you're NOT alone - surround yourself with others to support
      • ZOOM OUT - look at the entire story that God has written
      • Realize that anything that's challenging is all the result of man's rebellion
      • Note there will be an end to the story where God delivers us…there's purpose in your suffering

    [56:43 - 01:01:44] Wrapping Up

    • Bob's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Bob

  • 5 Minute Drill | Keep Complacency Away From Your Clarity

We can have all the clarity in the world, but if we don't act on it, there's no coming through…whether it's in the clutch or not.

In today's 5 Minute Drill, I share the third ingredient in my Clutch Recipe™. It's all about STRATEGY. Eventually, we have to shift from AWARENESS to EXECUTION if we want to come up clutch. Today's ingredient is about taking the clarity you have on what to do, and forcing you to go, "Ok, now, how do I do it?"

If you want a reliable way to turn your clarity into consistent action, then make sure to lock in to today's Drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 14:00] Opening Segment

    • J.R. gives more context around execution and shares the third ingredient of his Clutch Recipe™

    [14:01 - 18:20] What's The Drill?

    • STEP 1: Pick another transition you're going to apply this to (or the same from last week, if you want)
    • STEP 2: When you're about to transition into your next moment (or role of the day), you're going to MANAGE your mind, heart, and body, leveraging the Scan and Respond system (Ingredient #1 in the Clutch Recipe™).
    • STEP 3: CLARIFY who you are, where you are, what you need, and why you need it (Ingredient #2 in the Clutch Recipe™).
    • STEP 4: STRATEGIZE your next move.
      • SAY what you're going to do TO YOURSELF, OUT LOUD. Then…
      • SEE IT happening. Take a few seconds to see yourself doing what you said you're going to do. You can do this with your eyes open or closed, although J.R. prefers closed whenever possible to limit distractions.

  • Dr. Torrie Higgins | The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence

Pursuing excellence is HARD. It requires so much of your spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical capacity (and then some). You've probably heard the saying, "The tough get going when the going gets tough." But how? …how can you unlock your greatest capabilities when it gets tough? …when the odds are against you?

We dig into those answers on today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show. I sit down with human performance expert, Dr. Torrie Higgins.

Dr. Torrie has spent thousands of hours in the trenches with the US Special Forces and some of the most high-powered executives and athletes in the world.

In this latest episode, Torrie and I talk about…

    • Why everyone has the potential to achieve high levels of success and growth
    • How the US Special Forces train to overcome pressure and what you can do about it
    • The key to limitless motivation

    …and so much more.

If you want to consistently bring out your best when pursuing excellence gets hard, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 20:08] Introducing Torrie to the show

    • Torrie's most embarrassing moment
    • Torrie's background, story, and professional journey

[11:21 - 22:35] Why everyone has the potential to achieve high levels of success and growth - it's not only reserved for elite athletes and alpha-males

    • Starts with mindset - believe there's always the possibility for growth
    • Actions follow beliefs.
    • The starting point for demystifying beliefs that we can't do certain things is in the narratives we're telling ourselves.
    • Push yourself to ask, "What's my goal?" Then 10x your answer. If you feel like you have fear surrounding your 10x answer, "run the experiment." Too many people are stopping the conversation once the fear starts. Torrie suggests to keep the conversation going a little longer and collect data on yourself.
    • Once you get ideas out of your head, your brain can go into problem-solving mode.
    • You will pursue your goals better with social support (getting consistent feedback is a flow trigger). When we're going solo through our journey, we tend to stay in execution mode.
    • Embrace the struggle if you want to maximize your potential. We need stress and struggle to increase our capacity.

[22:36 - 35:58] How the US Special Forces train to overcome pressure and what you can do about it

    • There's a difference between stress and pressure.
    • Pressure depends on your level of training and preparation - if you've done the reps under intense conditions, you're more likely to have a controlled response.
    • Special Forces Mentality, "We're going to do the reps when we're at our worst." Make your reps as challenging and scary as possible.
    • If you can't replicate the pressure situation, visualize it. This will activate the same areas of your brain that will light up as if you're actually living that experience. There is where WHAT IF comes into play.

    [35:59 - 46:25] - The key to limitless motivation

    • Spend UNDISTRACTED time with yourself to find out what motivates you
    • Uncover your true purpose - how can you take what you're good at and interested in and serve something or someone else other than yourself
    • If you're unclear on your purpose, brainstorm what 10 questions or problems you care most about solving - if you can structure your goals around that problem, it's limitless motivation

    [46:26 - 51:21] Wrapping Up

    • Torrie's BIG domino

  • Drew Pittman | Your Playbook for a Winning Career and Family

    Relationships…parenting…balancing your life and career…

    It gets tough, doesn't it?

Some days, I just wish one of my coaches would call me up, give me the play to overcome a challenge, and I go and execute it.

I guess I didn't realize how easy I had it as an athlete.

But seriously - you want to win, especially in your career and at home.

Sometimes we just need to pick up someone else's playbook to get some direction.

Because, let's face it, we don't have all the answers…

Especially when it comes to managing and intersecting our careers and personal relationships.

On today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Drew Pittman - co-founder of Brain Vault, author of the book First Team Dad, and NFLPA-Certified agent for over three decades.

Drew had an experience early in his agent career that shifted the way he thought about his faith, family, and the game of football. …and it turned into a Playbook.

In this latest episode, Drew and I talk about…

    • Drew's recommendation for preventing self-awareness turning into self-sabotage

    • Drew's playbook for maintaining a tight-knit family while living a life as a leader

    • What advice Drew's mom would give about getting to your next level in today's crazy world

    …and so much more.

If you want some go-to plays for winning the game of life, then lock in to today's episode.

    • #1 - Start with your identity
      • You're a child of God and created in His image
      • Stop creating your identity based on what you do, and start creating identity based on who you are
    • #2 - Understand you're going to fail
      • Then communicating to your people that you're going to fail…that you're not perfect
      • There's a difference between telling someone you're sorry and asking for forgiveness
    • #3 - Be intentional
      • For Drew, it's spending time reading his Bible, in prayer, and with his family
      • Intentionally ask God 'What should I do?" then take notes about what you're hearing
    • Make all three of these part of your family culture

    • Made a decision to not let his business run his life
    • Get clear on your priorities, then make choices that are in alignment with them
    • Parents: we don't need to give our kids everything
    • Your struggle is what makes you who you are. Don't remove the struggle from your kids.
    • You have to prepare your kids for the road. You don't have to prepare the road for your kids.
