The stable -> level up

Near the end of 2017 I fell in love with Niv Mizzet, Parun. I’ve always loved drawing cards and being able to do damage to others was something I totally loved.

I don’t claim to be great at building decks, but back then the way I built decks was way different than I do now. I didn’t exactly do slot theory and it was mostly just slam in good cards and hope for the best.

I was doing pretty well with it for a while, but as time went on and I added more cards just for the heck of it the deck got worse and kind of fell out of favor.

Near the end of 2019 I had been trying to make a draw-all-the-cards and take-all-the-turns type deck. At first I thought this would be a good strategy for Emry, but then realized, hey why not revisit Niv Mizz.

The new theme for niv was Draw all the cards, take all the turns, and wheels.

I have played five games with Niv since I have revamped and won all five.

With the stable I can see what cards I’ve added and if something new doesn’t feel right you can always see what you removed.

Decks need to have good synergies in them, not just combos or combos at all. Also just because a card is good, doesn’t mean it’s great for every deck.

An alternate way to win, also a way to fuel your graveyard (ie your second hand)

What is Milling?

This tends to be especially true for newer players. I know I used to feel this way when I first started playing Magic. I also used to look at the top card of my library after mulliganing, I don’t do this anymore. To the folks out there, do you look after mulliganing?

I want to possibly convince folks out there that this isn’t that bad, and could even be a good thing. Here’s how I convinced Zack

Some players really get upset when they get milled or Cards taken with Gonti/Grenzo

Ryan asked these questions

Why are you sad when you get milled?

Do you feel sad when you don’t draw a particular card during a game?

Would you feel differently if the cards went to the bottom of your library instead of your graveyard?

How would you feel if you could start with half of your deck in your graveyard?

The mental energy you’re expending on thinking about the cards you could have drawn (or got milled), could be put to better use, like making a plan.

Any number of possibilities could have been. Due to variance there is no way to guarantee the cards that would have milled would have been drawn.(Maybe a better way to phrase this is, it kinda just changes where your opponent cut your deck)

The more you know what’s in your graveyard, the more you know about the other cards in your deck

Zack said in general being milled made him feel slightly sad about the possibilities that could have been.

Cards in hands are actual possibilities

In this same way, cards taken with Gonti aren’t the same as cards taken with Blatant Thievery/Expropriate, cause you didn’t invest any resources like card/mana into the things being stolen

Cards in your graveyard are a resource as well. Your opponent could cast Patriarch’s Bidding or Exhume for example

Sometimes it does sting if your deck is built on a specific 2 card combo. I try not to rely on specific cards, because there’s no guarantee you’re going to see them during a game, unless you run a LOT of tutors, and that’s something I don’t frequently do.

Being milled isn’t the same as discard

This conversation started after a game with Zack and Ryan where Ryan played Mesmeric Orb and Zack expressed annoyance about being milled.

Start with a Commander Precon Deck

You can’t windmill slam a Cyclonic Rift in.

With between $5 to $10 in upgrade money from each session you had to get creative with the cards you put in.

With this restriction you’re forced to find cards you might not have considered otherwise that might end up being really good.

This also levels the playing field in terms of expensive cards
