February 10, 2011Pbe Library NewsletterHello from the library again. It's been a couple of months but we hope that everyone has had a great start to the year 2011 and it's hard to believe that we're already in our 2nd semester. Things have really been picking up in the library. We've been very busy. Our kindergarteners are now using non fiction books and learning more about them so you probably noticed more non fiction books coming home. First grade has been working on how the libraries organize and they're getting ready to learn how to use the online catalog to locate books. In 2nd grade we've been exploring the non fiction section using the Dewey Decimal System. We have new directories that the kids can use and we've done a couple of scavenger hunt with those. In 3rd grade we've been learning about a reference sources. We've reviewed all of the print reference sources and have now moved on to some online and electronic reference sources that are available to them so you'll have to ask them about discus(?) and what's available...more0minPlay
September 19, 2010PBE Library News, Week Sept. 13What a great week in the library as you know the tree house book fair was here. It was a huge success. And even now some students might have missed the toys and what not. I think over all everyone was pretty please with the selection of books. The books are raised $1200 for the library and that money will help to purchase more books for our library, pay for performances that promote readings as well as prizes for our book club. So a big thank you to all of you for your support. This week in the library. The kindergarten nurse will be talking about the characters and the story. First graders will be working on library math. Second grade will be reviewing the online catalog. Third through fifth will be creating a list of books base under what file levels. September 12, 2010PBE Library News, Week Sept. 6Well even though it was a short week in the library it was a really good week. Kindergarten through 2nd grade we talked about choosing the right book being able to figure out books that were just challenging enough for us to become better readers. In kindergarten and 1st grade we talked about how we try on the books taking a picture walk looking at the words seeing if it was just the right fit just like you would in a shoe store trying on your shoes. In 2nd grade we talked about the 5 finger test choosing a page in the middle of the book and starting reading and 5 fingers every time you missed a word you put a finger down and if you have 4 more fingers down by the end of the page it might be a little too hard for you. So those are that's just a quick way to try on book and make sure it fits you just right. Grades 3 through 5 we worked on locating books and practice looking up the number of words in a book for the Millionaire Word Club. 5th graders were asked to choose a book for their book reports.
