We are people of hope and people of God’s powerful and amazing promises. But far too often and easily, we get stuck in doubt and fear instead. What is it about these two things that overtake us so regularly? How do God’s people let go of such incredible birthrights for things that create so much misery? We may be locked in this battle for the rest of our lives, but we certainly aren’t the first ones to face it. Israel stood at the edge of a land of promise, but chose to react in fear and doubt instead. As we read this story, we can take some lessons for our own lives so that we don’t need to repeat their mistakes. Let us live in the hope we have, and may the Lord help us to live victorious over doubt and fear.

1. The passage in Numbers mentions that the spies roamed around for 40 days. It seems that 40 days comes up frequently in the Bible. Is there a deeper meaning of 40 days?

2. As a parent of little ones, I admit to feeling like I don't want to leave this earth just yet. Like you said, I know heaven is amazing, but I can't help but feel a loss at thinking of going there and missing out on my family. What would you say to parents or people who feel a great responsibility on earth? How do we put those conflicting feelings into perspective?

The normal Christian life is a walk of faith. That means we usually don’t see very far down the road. We know God is good and His plans for us are what we want. But we can’t often know how God is going to be good or how His plans are going to play out in ways that show it. So are we doomed to always feeling like we’re walking blind? Actually, no, we’re not. In this story, we see something unique. God shows His people what He has for them and how good He wants to be. And the Lord does that sometimes in our lives too. Make no mistake; we’re not talking about seeing or experiencing all the good He has for us. But sometimes just a taste is meant to encourage us and to help us have the trust and faith we need to go forward into great promises and great challenges.

Raising kids is a study in change. As soon as you think you have one phase figured out, your children are on to the next, and you’re almost back at square one trying to develop some kind of plan that could be effective. In the early days, you’re just hoping for some sleep and that you aren’t missing anything important in your ignorance. Later, you become very aware of influences on your child that can cause great concern. As they approach adulthood, you struggle to figure out how to coach them and let them go at the same time. And there are a million shifts and changes in between. Of course, motherhood is not the only place where life is filled with change. In fact, it is everywhere in everyone’s life. And it can be overwhelming. Certainly the recent months have had more than their share of uncertainty and changes to deal with.
