The word 'Market is derived from the Latin word 'MARCATUS', which means merchandise or trade or a place where business is conducted. Marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas, goods and services to create an exchange that satisfies individual and organizational objectives. Marketing management is concerned with the direction of those activities which are performed to obtain marketing goals i.e. increasing the customer's satisfaction and firm's profits. All management functions i.e. planning, organizing, controlling, directing, coordinating, and decision making are also adopted in marketing.

Introduction of Marketing
Marketing which was once a part of management has now become an independent subject. Nowadays, marketing is an important area of study throughout the world. In every university and professional institution, education is imparted in the subject of marketing. We can certainly call the 21st century as 'Century of Marketing'.
The development of marketing is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. There is no single answer to the question of "What is Marketing"?
Different persons understand the meaning of marketing differently depending on their ability, needs, and environment. Consumers consider it as synonymous with shopping, sellers treat it as selling, farmers understand it as cooperative marketing, engineers consider it as product designing, and managers as retailing. Hence, everyone understands marketing in his own way. In short, it may be said that the word marketing is commonly used by us but the word marketing is mostly misunderstood by most of us. As a matter of fact, the term 'Marketing' is not confined to shopping, selling, cooperative marketing, product designing, advertising, retailing, etc. For some persons, "Marketing is what a marketer does." But this meaning also lacks clarity in understanding the subject.
Speaking, marketing is a comprehensive term and it includes all resources and sets off business activities necessary to direct and facilitate the flow of goods and services from producer to consumer or user, including product planning and after-sale services, in the process of distribution.
