Common Creatives

This week, Maestro and the Doctor dig even further into the career metamorphosis of Kevin Smith. Shifting from an up and coming 90's indie director to podcast trailblazer. Topics include man-to-walrus transformations, TALKING about movies vs. talking about MOVIES, and what is the product that Kevin Smith even creates in his later career? This episode will go by faster than Walt Flanagan's dog. Snoogins!

Maestro and the Doctor found another topic that required a double-episode feature! Join us as we dig into 90’s indie film wunderkind and prolific podcaster, Kevin Smith. From Clerks to Smodcast, this guy does everything and offers his unique cultural voice to projects of all kinds. This first episode focuses on his filmmaking career and anger at movie critics. Doc and the Maestro get nerdy this week, as we talk about a writer who means a lot to both of us. Scott Snyder is primarily known as a writer of Batman and Detective Comics. He has also developed fantastic original work, including American Vampire, The Wake, and Wytches. We talk about what makes Scott Snyder's work and creativity unique.

This week, Maestro and the Doctor talk about the unqualified genius that is Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino). Glover's early work, from Derrick Comedy to Community, foreshadows the surrealist and politically charged narratives and music that feature in his current career. Get on board as we dig into what is so creatively fascinating about the career of Donald Glover.

This week, the Doctor and the Maestro talk about one of their favorite artists, David Bazan. His brutally honest songwriting is at the forefront of projects including Pedro the Lion, Headphones, Lo Tom, and his solo work. Bazan began in the Christian music market, but didn’t stay there. His work can be seen as a commentary on, and a reckoning with, the darker and more authoritarian sides of American Evangelicalism. Dig in with us!

This week, Doc and the Maestro talk about "The American Astronaut." It's the best black-and-white comedy-western-sci-fi rockabilly punk surrealistic musical that you'll ever see! This indie gem comes from the creative force that is Cory McAbee. He's a writer, director, producer, actor, performer, musician, composer, and visual artist. Even if you've never heard of this one, dig in with us as we talk about this ecclectic and completely unique... uh... "movie." HEY BOY! HEY BOY!

What the forking shirt!? Maestro and the Doctor dig deep into The Good Place for this episode. This NBC sitcom stars Kristen Bell and older (wiser) Ted Danson. We talk about its representation of the afterlife, how moral philosophy and comedy can mix, and why it actually is important to be a good person! Spoilers: it’s because we’re all in this thing together!
