When Jesus went through Samaria, and revealed Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman, He was extending His ministry beyond the borders of Israel. He extended it to their enemies, and their lost family members (the lost tribes of Israel). In this encounter, Jesus is revealing that His desire is for His people to look beyond those who are “like” them and who they “like”. We must bring Jesus even to those we often ignore, neglect, or reject.

God has deep compassion on those who are harassed, helpless, and confused. He longs to shepherd them to green pastures of rest and plenty. He longs to give them life. But Jesus says that the Lord of the Harvest needs workers who will go into the field, looking for who might be ready to receive the invitation of Jesus.

Just like the first disciples dropped everything to follow Jesus, we are called to make Him the absolute center of our lives. This means paying close attention to the people around us and asking God to help us see how He is already at work in their situations. By keeping our eyes and ears open, we can step up as "fishers of men" and invite others to experience how leaning into God can completely change their story.

Instead of trying to figure out who to blame for suffering, Jesus teaches us to see pain as an opportunity for God to bring healing and restoration right now. He challenges the idea that faith is just about waiting for heaven, showing us that God actually wants to fix the brokenness of this world through us today. If we focus only on religious rules while ignoring the needs of real people, we are actually the ones who are spiritually blind.

While we often pit religion against relationship, Jesus demonstrated that true intimacy with God requires learning His language through the Law rather than defining love on our own terms. By identifying the commands to love God and neighbor as the "heaviest" obligations, Jesus fulfilled the Law and dismantled the modern, self-centered gospel of "being true to yourself." True life is found not in self-expression, but in making God the gravitational center of our existence and loving Him in the specific ways He has revealed.

Jesus rejected the corrupt temple system of His day to show that God’s presence is no longer confined to a building that excludes the poor and the outsider. Instead, He established His own body as the true temple and later poured His Spirit out on His followers, making us the living place where God dwells on earth. This means we cannot fully experience God in isolation; we need to be united with a diverse community of believers to truly function as His church.
