What might the Bible’s grounded, poetic, non-linear wisdom material (the OT wisdom books and Jesus’s wisdom sayings) have to say on the being/doing dialogue?  The wisdom material invites us to pay attention both to the world around us (nature) and also to the world within us (thoughts, emotions, bodily responses) and uses metaphors in particular (ants, birds, light, bread) as a bridge to new ways of being, and doing. Kirsty and Andrew each reflect on their responses to one Proverb in particular (6:6) and onward to Matthew 6.

What does it mean to have faith? And what does it mean to be faithful? In this talk, as part of the “BE” series, Malcolm considers how faith (what we hope for in the future, but cannot see) and faithfulness (how we live in dedication and commitment in the present) can co-exist. Using a variety of examples, including the stories referred to in Hebrews 11, Malcolm explores how understanding faith and faithfulness can help us live in the Kingdom of God.

Our external worlds are often rushing around, in turmoil and upheaval. We read some wonderful promises of God presence with us in the midst of this turmoil, but how do we access that peace that comes from knowing God is with us? In Psalm 46, we read that we are to “Be still”. Stillness in a world rushing around seems so counter-intuitive, but enables us encounter God, the internal turmoil of our hearts and allow God to act on our behalf.

Society has based a great deal of importance on success, achievement, and productivity. As a result, most of us define ourselves by what we do, our job title, our salary our accomplishments. However, the focus on these external things can lead us to a sense of emptiness, anxiety and burn out.

Conversely, if we focus on our inner lives, our values and sense of purpose, we will discover our true identity and a purpose will naturally flow from within.

Continuing a series looking at the DNA of our community, we are considering how our journey has led us to be a people who long for deeper intimacy with God through experiencing His presence, responding to His love in worship. Worship is an intensely person-to-person expression of relationship with Father and Son through the Spirit. It is not abstract, but unavoidably face-to-face and surrendered, a preparation for our ultimate encounter with Him as the Bride with the Bridegroom.

In this Easter sermon, Rupert Ward talks about ‘Dust + Glory’ – celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. We usually think of glory as being found in pageant and honour, but in this passage (John 12: 19-26) Jesus explains that glory will actualy be revealed through crucifixion, that death is necessary for life to burst forth, that glory emerges from dust. It is to this cross that we bring all our human experiences of loss and pain, suffering and disappointment, despair, worries and heart aches. Jesus participates in our human experience, of pain, grief and the violence of crucifixion – so that we can participate in the divine nature and life of God.

This week we hear from visiting speakers, Rich and Ness Wilson. Rich is the Leader for Fusion, an organisation committed to championing a worldwide movement of student mission. Ness leads the Pioneer Network of Churches. Together they lead Open Heaven Church in Loughborough. Referring to Acts 20; 22-24, Rich and Ness talk about following the leading of the Holy Spirit, and sharing the Good News, even (as seen in this passage) in the most challenging of circumstances. Rich explains what it means for God to be less ‘concerned in maintaining our standard of living but in us living to His standards.’ Ness shares practical ways in which we can share the gospel.

We will observe the life and experience of the lame man in Acts 3 (vs1-10) to show us what we can do to share the gospel in a new, yet timeless and spirit-filled fashion.
